Is there a New Model Daytona Coming?

Hi,

I've been lurking here for a few weeks and have been trying to find out if any of the rumours of a New Model Daytona are true?

I have a SS with black face 2004 model which i am very happy with but i keep hearing rumours that there is a new model design coming. I dont mean just a new face design/colour but a restyled, possibly slightly larger model.

Of course i see that nothing was announced at Basel and I assume it would be next years exhibition before any potential new Daytona would be announced?

Meanwhile I find the new Sea Dweller Deap Sea stunning, but VERY expensive!

This question has come up before but I think you'll find the short answer is that only Rolex really know and they aren't saying.

Logic states that they continue to sweep their new design changes through the entire sport range and that the Daytona will get "super-sized" at some stage. My theory is that they seem to be going for a 10 year cycle (approx) with the 16520 introduced around 1990, the 116520 (yours) around 2000, so perhaps the new design will come out around 2010?

On a personal note, I am on a 3 year waiting list (in writing from Rolex UK) so I hope they bring out a new one in 1 - 2 years so I can be one of the first to own it.

Just my opinion. Not sure if anyone else has more upto date info...

Cheers - Simon

Welcome to TRF!

What should the updated Daytona look like if you could choose?

Anyway, Rolex did make a small update to the Daytona by launching the RG version this year.

I believe the Daytona SS costs around £4900 now in the UK

What should a New Daytona like? Not that different hopefully.

I have steered clear of 'big' fashionable watches as i don't think they suit me, but recently i have ocasionally thought that the Daytona looks a bit small, partcilarly in the bezel area. Perhaps a 43mm version like the new DeepSea but without the height of course.

I also like the bezel numerals that are the current white gold Daytonas and the red hands too, perhaps they could make it onto a new SD Daytona?

Finally a date would be a nice touch as its something i really miss.

Although it's not bigger in diametre, why not go for a nice "Big Block" Tudor chronograph? It has a date feature and looks mighty fine on the wrist. They can still be had for decent money and are destined to rise in price by the day.

I agree. My only complaint (and it's a very minor one ) is that the Daytona doesn't have a date function. But y'know, if Rolex did put a date, then they'd incorporate the cyclops and that would completely ruin it IMO.

I think blue lumes against a white dial would be unbelievable.

Hi Simon,

Out of interest is there a formal waiting list at Rolex UK for a SS Daytona? As I would have more faith in this being operated fairly as I am not a big spender so no doubt an AD would overlook me without me ever knowing. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe the 50 year anniversary for the Daytona is 2010. I like the WG Daytona with the black dial, but I'm probably going to wait until after the anniversary, just in case Rolex deceides to make a change in design.

I really like the Black Dial and larger numerals of the bezel of the WG Daytona but find it hard to justify the huge premium for the watch in White Gold when it essentially is the same colour as the SS.

I wear my SS Daytona every day and am concerned over the WG as I believe there are issues with the WG colour turning yellow in time and of course the softness of the material. I would be interested to hear feedback from anyone who has had a WG Daytona for sometime and wears it daily.

Buddy: I did 2 things to secure my Daytonas:
1. Butter up the manager....give him cigars, remember Christmas and give him a gift.......call every month........to remind him that you are thinking of him.........they make a huge difference in determining who gets what.......
2. Try to be a big fish in a small pond, being in LA, I am competiting against Hollywood stars and producers so instead of allying myslef with the Rolex Flagship store at South Coast Plaza, align yourself with stores that sell other things like London Jewelers or Ben Bridge........rumor has it that these specialty stores also want a nice distribution of where these watches go to......I got my first Daytona after buying my wife's engagement ring at the same place.........killed 2 birds with 1 stone!. Good Luck!.
