Happy Thought For The Day...

If the 4.5 Billion year history of the planet Earth was a 24 hour clock, complex life did not occur (The Cambrian explosion) until 10pm (530 million years ago) or 2200, Dinosaurs did not occur until 11PM or 2300 and were snuffed out by an asteroid around 11:40pm or 2340 and modern humans (Homo Sapiens) first arrived in the last two seconds of that 24 hour clock.

And if that doesn't make you feel kinda unimportant consider this.

The Earth "peaked" about 300 million years ago.

The planet is 4.5 billion years old, life on Earth is at least 3.4 billion years old and the last animals will probably die out 500 million years from now. Species diversity was much higher in the past and our planet is actually in it's middle to old age.

The Earth is currently in decline.

There now doncha feel better?

I think it was Hawking who said there are a hundred thousand million stars in our galaxy and there are at least a hundred thousand million galaxies and therefor it is a statistical impossibility that we are the only life in the universe. I would tend to agree.

Actually the Drake Equation came before Hawking even.

And while I personally believe "life" happens everywhere conditions can support it, I also think "intelligent life" is much more rare. Not because we are special, but because so many conditions are required and most habitable planets have such a short window of opportunity for it's development.

And excellent book on the topic is Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe by Peter Ward.

That may be. However, I don't get the rush to meet this other life, considering that most of us don't even make the effort to say hello to our neighbors.
