help...fake or real?
hi, i'm new to the boards. i hope his is the right section to post this. i was wondering if you guys can help me figure this one out. i haven't taken this over to my local rolex dealer yet but thought i'd start off here first. i got this used not sure if its real rolex as a gift from someone. i noticed it doesn't have "swiss made" between the 6 dial like my 06 Datejust. the band seems to look and feel real but i'm not familiar with older rolex's. if more photos are needed please let me know. thanks in advanced.

At first glance it looks good to me.
I'm no expert with diamond dials, but the dial looks good. Anyway, some more learned members will give you a hand. As for the case, bezel and bracelet, they all look good to me. (no guarantee given)

Hmm, the coronet on the dial picture looks a little suspicious, as well as the 'L' in the ROLEX signature doesn't match the bottom of the coronet. Maybe it's angle or what not, but without better closer photos I'd put a big question mark.
Ditto to the crown, and the crown on the clasp. Not terribly convincing. |

I agree with Steve, dial looks kosher and font on the "x" looks good too. You got this as a gift? Impressive!

You guys think the cyclops looks straight? And the "swiss" at 6 o'clock? How about the points on the crown on the dial?

the coronet on the dial does look a bit odd!

IMO it's more than a bit sus. The script doesn't look Rolex to me.
Whip the back off and check it, I doubt it's genuine.

Everything looks okay to me except for the coronet on the dial at the 12 o clock position. It does not look very symmetrical. Maybe the dial is aftermarket?

Edit: Sorry I have to post a retraction...
attached is a stock picture from a reputable seller, the L of ROLEX aligns at the vertical line, compared to the same line in the O.P.'s dial, they do align. My bad As for the position of the coronet, there is a fair bit of difference. The silver one definitely have the coronet placed higher than the MOP one. Apart from this, the 2nd point of the coronet still looks suspicious. |

I am leaning towards a non-original dial.

Steve - I agree with you here and, I must admit, the coronet detailing on the crown and clasp shots, at best, look very poor. They're usually sharply defined and the ones in the photos look a bit suspect - unless it's just wear.
Certainly the coronet on the dial is very poor and the 'Rolex' lettering doesn't look quite right to me, at all. It will be interesting to have the opinion of the AD on this one.

Welcome to TRF, Keith!
One thing that strikes me as being a bit odd are the hands and the (beforementioned) "SWISS" designation. Saying "SWISS" only would make the watch have SuperLuminova hands (period 1998-2000), but the hands of the DJ look more like Tritium coated ones to me since you can see they are showing patination in the Tr. coating. Furthermore, on both pics showing the dial, you can see that both the hour, minute and second's hand are all smudged up by fingerprints. My guess is that Tritium hands were added later on. Another thing is the coronet on the crown! As stated, it's way off centre. Like said, the ultimate test is to have the caseback taken off and view the movt. Personally, I'd pass on it, though.

My guess, without a heft test, is that it is a genuine Rolex with an aftermarket dial.
Did they make knock off engine turned bezel watches in SS that would hold up for a few decades? |

I'm with "Lovey" () so far on this...after market dial. What are the numbers stamped on the bracelet, end pieces and any markings that might be on the clasp blades so I can look this up for you.

so i took it over to the AD and the verdict is, that it is authentic but has an after market dial. also, the serial number corresponds to the year 1985.
thanks |

According to this site: http://www.oysterinfo.de/en/detailin...mern/index.php The code N3 indicates that the watch (at least the clasp) was made in March of 1989. IMO, I think you have a genuine Rolex with an after market dial (like the AD says) Getting it to a RSC and having it opened (if the AD did not do this) would be in your best interest because if the rest of the watch is legit, you can get an authentic dial put in and the receipt for all of this will serve as your "papers" if you ever decide to sell the watch. |

The watch is real! The dial is what is referred to as 'custom' It's not a Rolex made dial, but judging from the clasp, and watch in general, I'm going to have to say it's real.
