DeepSea... Doh!!!
I have been stupid when browsing photos of the new DeepSea, and assumed that this photo was showing the watch with a domed crystal. However, on closer inspection, that clearly isnt the situation, and I am thinking this is the back of the case. Is that a glass back to the watch to show the movement? Or is it a flat black back? What is it actually showing? Whatever, I quite like the Deep Sea, but that back looks like it will be as uncomfy as hell...

I think the caseback is supposed to be titanium and I believe the curve is an optical illusion.

I hope so, because otherwise that would be ridiculously uncomfortable. I am pretty tempted to order one of these I think. Can anyone confirm are the centre links polished or brushed?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but... the back is also domed. It's been long known that spherical shapes are very strong and highly pressure resistant. In the end, it's a matter of degree and comfort (oh yeah, and price )

I guess I will need to try one, just seems that it wouldnt be overly comfortable, but I guess they can't have made it too bad. Most of them won't be bought for their "purpose" so if they are uncomfortable Rolex may have a problem on their hands. |

I forgot to mention, the back is indeed titanium. The outer ring is SS and appears to serve as a screw-ring applying pressure to the center part securing it against a sealing surface (lock ring?) around the perimeter of the inside of the case.

Hmmmmmm....with that size (43 mm) and that enormous weight (222 grams), coupled with that caseback dome, makes you really wonder what the comfort level will be like!!

222 grams sounds heavy indeed but... there are Omega's that match that weight. By all measures, the new DeepSea is a TANK. I mean that in a good way. Now if Rolex would quit drinking their own bathwater and stop engraving stuff on every available space...

The OMEGA PO (45.5 mm) weighs in at a massive 222 grams. I should know....I owned one.....and it was NOT a very comfy watch!!

If the caseback is domed I can't imagine it being to the degree that the photo portrays. It would have to be very subtle or it would certainly be uncomfortable.

Although we all appreciate the automatic mechanical movement that the Rolex brand is famous for, a quartz movement in a silicone filled case is simply a better solution for deep diving, and big maximum depth numbers. The Technomarine Abyss is rated for 12,000 meters, and doesn't require an outrageous structure to prevent implosion. The practice of filling deep diving electronic instuments with liquid is well known. The "Jason" submersible and others have used this technique to much success to prowl the ocean depths without failure.
I like the SD, but think that I'll be looking for a current model for it's simplicity, elegance, and classic design. The Deep Sea is just overkill for someone like me who never plans on diving or being on the wrong side of the submarine pressure vessel.

I asked the AD just how finely you can adjust the bracelet since I would expect the DSSD to be a (potentially) very unfortable watch to wear due to its weight. His reply was that the 1,8 mm increments of the saw toothed adjusting facility of the clasp are equivalent to the pin holes of the ordinary SD bracelet. Imho, it does make a great difference when you shift the pin one hole back or forth, so I would expect the DSSD to fit you like a glove. But only IF you are lucky to have just the right size of wrist where one of the "saw edge" adjusting positions fits you Because if you are moving the saw edge lever either back or forth, it would result in either a too loose or too snug fit.

In contrary to what the majority thinks since SDDS 's introduction and still up to now, I am 100% that - when we start getting this watch at hands and seeing it for real around - it will be a major success, an object to admire and even envy and the subject of many discussions. Just wait and see.
I liked this watch since the 1st time I saw it - even though I am one of those who like the classic Rolex looks and not necessarily the new direction where Rolex is going (I even bought last week a Pepsi GMT instead of the GMT-IIc). But I find this one being a classic as well - adjusted for the 21st century (if only the price was reasonable...)

I heard you have to be Trimix certified (per Rolex) to purchase a Deep Sea

I know I'm in the minority, but I like the old SD. DSSD leaves me cold, still appreciate the new information on that new Rolex, despite its busy 'face', which is a turn-off for me.
