Looking for advice for my first watch.

Hey everyone.

I am new to the Rolex world, and watches in general. I never knew I wanted a Rolex until about 3 months ago, and still use my phone as a watch.

I was dead set on a 36mm two tone datejust until I went to an AD yesterday and tried one on, and it seems a little small for me.

So I tried on the datejust II and immediately knew it was the one. However, also tried on a hulk submariner and like the size and colour, but I liked the datejust II so much more.

Now my whole world is flipped upside down, where I was hunting for a good deal on a 36mm DJ for less then $4K CAD(used), I am now considering close to $13K CAD (new) on on a Datejust II.

Honestly $13K is a bit high for me right now, however I could swing it, it would be the biggest purchase for me besides a vehicle. And not something I want to buy on a whim.

And it looks like I'd be spending about $8K for a used DJII which is still twice as much as I was planning on spending.

I am from Canada but am travelling to NYC next week, should I even bother looking there? I would prefer a used watch and have a feeling if I go into an AD again I'd come out with a heavier wrist and a lighter wallet lol.

I am considering holding off for a few months so I can confidently walk into an AD or jump on a good used watch deal with little or no hesitation. Any advice??

If you go to the rolex for sale section you can find a new djII for around 6k or less. Most sellers are trusted, you can check sellers in the who's who section. Good luck.

Just take a look at the for sale forum and you can find better deals there than in NY or at your local AD. Your certainly don't need to spend $13k on DJII. Good luck.

You can certainly get a great deal on a pre-owned DJII on this forum. Save some $ and take a look at the for sale section here, you won't be disappointed.

First Rolex, my advice is to go to AD (and obviously get a new one).

But if you're on a budget, preowned Rolex is a good option. However, with preowned watches, if you're a first time buyer, you need to see the condition for yourself. It's not so much as misrepresentation by the seller, but also the expectation from the buyer.

I would say goe with a pre-owned by a trusted seller. I purchased a 2014 GMT in excelllant condition for thousands less than a AD would charge and it was only used for about 4 months out of the year to boot!! Winner winner!!

Can't argue with the comments above! This will also allow you to get a good feel for what they are going for and the different combinations out there. Hopefully, this will get you confident to pull the trigger on what you really like and being in it for well under retail will make it all the better. Good luck!!!

The important thing is to get what you really want.

$6-8K (or even $13!) for what will make you happy is a much better deal than $3K for something that will not...

Price seems high

Hi I am in Canada as well. Your AD price seems high and I assume includes tax. I can get a TT DJ2 from my AD, discounted to 9600 so it comes to $11,200 tax in CAD$ (cash deal) When you take in the US exchange rate the best deal is usually here. I would push your AD harder or try and get a used one from a trusted seller here, keep in mind the duty on top of the taxes though. Most times when I run the numbers the best deals are still in Canada Try www.canwatchco.ca, it is a Canadian watch forum that has a for sale section in Canada only and solves all the duty/exchange problems. Run by a guy named Bobby out of Montreal who is a stand up guy and has some great deals.

Don't be in too much of a rush.

Do some looking around and try on more models and keep saving.

It's a big purchase and Rolex is about a lot more than just style or even timekeeping.

There's a wealth of history, tradition, innovation, and other intangibles that could lend more value to your ownership, if you take the time to study and learn.

I agree with this. I find the more time I spend on this site and looking at pictures, my taste rather quickly changed. I remember when I first was looking at Rolex, I didn't even consider anything with a diver style bezel. Not that I regret my purchase, but now I appreciate all the Rolex offerings, and it would be a much tougher decision for me now.

Heck even with the datejust there are so many dial/bezel combinations, I would have to think long and hard about which one to choose. I used to only like the blue with sticks and smooth bezel, but the more I look at them, I keep getting drawn to like the TT, slate w/ green romans, etc.

Thanks everyone.

The sticker price on the TV DJ I was $12.5k I didn't try to get a cash price or see if I could get a discount.

Generally speaking would the difference in price for a cash deal be much better then the sticker price? I'm not interested in financing or other options.

I've heard some people mention as much as 20% off sticker price based on how much buisness you plan on bringing them.

Would 20% off sticker for a cash transaction be on the high end for me to negotiate?

If the difference is only a grand or two over a used watch I'd probably buy new. They new one looked amazing on me. Lol

If I were to buy a watch south of the border what type of money should I be expectung to fork over for say a $5K watch?

Once again thanks for all the advice.

20% ain't gonna happen on a TT DJII at an AD 10% maybe. Not sure the rules in Canada about avoiding tax by purchasing/shipping from a different Provence. Given the USD to CAD exchange rate of late you might find a better deal North of the border.

Great suggestion! I got my first Rolex this year and sold it on Canadian Watch Company and bought another one the same day from CWC. It's a smaller forum but great deals can be found if you're patient. And you don't have to worry about taxes/duties and all that stuff. Highly recommended.

Good luck! I will never forget the day I put my first Rollie on my wrist.

Where in Canada do you reside? If you are on Vancouver, I can try to help you out. PM me with your details and we can touch base then.

As this is going to be your first Rolex, personally, I would go to the AD. It is one of those things that a person needs to experience at least once in their lives if they are on the market for a Rolex. Why not do it with the first one?

Buy from an authorized dealer. A 36 mm Datejust is a good deal. Are u sure it's too small?

Actually I got 21 percent off for cash, and it was 19 percent for credit. Bargain with your AD
