I am new to this forum and am looking at purchasing a sub with a date. I have the option to purchase a new sub from an AD for $8000 ($500 discount from an out of state AD with no sales tax or delivery fee) or a 2002 sub for $5800 from a local store (plus 6% sales tax). I like both, but wonder if a $2200 difference is appropriate for a 13 year old watch. The 2002 watch is also from an AD and they warranty the watch for 2 years and certify it is authentic.

They are two totally different watches. It is up to you which one you prefer. If it were me, the $2200 would be worth it for being brand new, and have all of the updates of the newer reference.

Some prefer the older 16610, and it's all a matter of personal preference.

Not sure how close he is to you, but look up Radcliffe Jewelers, they are in Maryland http://www.radcliffejewelers.com/ Talk to Erik they are a great AD.

DavidSW has a SubDate for $500 cheaper. He is just one of the many trusted sellers here on this forum (google his name). The price difference seems about right. There are some updates to the new model, including but not limited to a new design bracelet, a ceramic bezel, re-shaped lugs, and a different color/brighter lume on the dial. For most these seem well worth the extra money, especially the bracelet which now features solid (instead of hollow) links and the ability to micro-adjust without tools.

Some people prefer the new to the older version. There are lots of thread here discussing the differences between the two. The new has a lot to offer in terms of advancements in the braclet and ceramic bezel. Some prefer the shape of the older case.

Tough call but you really can't go wrong either way!

For your first Rolex get the new one; as you gain in knowledge you will be in a better position to buy used.
