rolex keeps breaking

if rolex is such a great watch, why is it that in the past 10 years it has stopped working twice. The 1st repair was $2,100 and this 2nd repair was just estimated at $1,800.

I have a times for 12 years and have only had to change the batteries. Why are rolex repairs so dam expensive? What breaks in them that makes the repair so costly

Hi, welcome to TRF. That's a bummer you have had multiple problems with your watch. What was wrong with it the first time? Have you had it serviced along the way? What's wrong with it now?

Hard to know without more specific information. For example, practically any mechanical watch will break if abused, e.g. Dropped several feet onto concrete. A cheap quartz timex would likely keep running after a similar drop. So in that sense, Rolex and mechanical watches in general are inferior to cheap battery powered digital watches.
As for why they cost so much to repair, it's because they're luxury items.
These days, most people don't buy these things solely for the practical purpose of timekeeping, as there are so many cheaper and more reliable means of meeting that need.

Steinway needs much more attention than Yamaha, Corvettes more than Miatas, Ferrari more than Corvettes, Harley more than Handa I guess if you wanna play in the exclusive leagues you pay seclusive money all the way around.

What model of Rolex? How old was it at the time of damage? Regular service shouldn't cost as much as you have listed above unless there was serious damage involved....

Something smells like it lives under a bridge....

Not sure if there is a point to your post. I have more than a dozen now and have had Rolex watches for more than 30 years; I have had only one needed repair on any of them, a dropped and broken crystal. A couple that I had regulated because they didn't meet my accuracy standard, and the rest only routine service calls.

Certainly would need to have more information about yours and your wearing habits to opine about your issue..

This makes no sense. Sounds like either abuse, unimaginably bad luck, or a story.

Sounds like you probably left the crown unscrewed and took a swim. Flooded the watch and had to pay the piper for your carelessness. What say you?

Perhaps the best person to answer your questions would be the watch repairer that worked on your watch?

That said, it's true that getting a Rolex watch fixed and/or serviced isn't the cheapest way to keep a functioning time telling device on your wrist.

Don't think leaving the crown unscrewed (at least on a sub) will do that. My understanding is that screw-down crown is more belt and suspenders than anything else.

It's these damn batteries, you need to replace with fresh even if you still see it ticking. I replace mine every winter solstice.

So the sub is waterproof with the crown unscrewed? I doubt it but I'm sure someone in the know will chime in.

Looking at the price of those repairs, it would seem to me that the watch had some very serious issues both times.

I dropped my DJ about five feet on to concrete and even though it dented the case, there was no internal damage and it works fine to this day. That was about 4-5 years ago.

We get a lot of people through here and we have a lot of regular members and I don't recall ever hearing of repairs like those, except when there's a good explanation.

As Julian noted, the best person to answer these questions is the person or persons who did the repairs and I can't believe that you'd pay those kinds of fees without knowing exactly what you were paying for.

The OP is speaking of his Timex, which he spelled "times."

I believe the Oyster is still wr with the crown unscrewed but not for its stated depth.
I knew a woman who has a 26mm DJ and never knew the crown needed to be screwed in and for years never had a problem.

The Trip-Lock will keep water out even with the crown unscrewed, but it's not recommended and probably not guaranteed.

The Rolex crown mechanisms are marvels unto themselves.

Well that's news to me! Good to hear. I knew the Daytona pushers are watertight if not pushed but had know idea that the triple lock crown will keep the watch watertight even if unscrewed.

Look at the coronet on the winding crown. If it has three dots underneath, it's a triplock, if a straight horizontal line, its twinlock. In your case, you have one of each.

Trip - locks are on the dive watches and the new GMTII. The GMTII still has a depth rating of 100m. I think Rolex heard the complaints about the thinner crown on the old GMTII.

Common Sense

I would hope with such high repair costs you have done the sensible thing and asked for a second opinion and separate estimate each time you needed to have your watch repaired. Failing that it maybe that you have fallen into the hands of an unscrupulous repair shop that have been happily/gleefully ripping you off all these years.

Maybe the smart thing would be to scan in your repair receipts and post them here for the experts to take a look at.

The tiny little men inside your watch that turn the gears and pull the levers and shovel coal into the tiny boiler to make it go typically agree to work on 5-year contracts. If bargaining talks hammering out a new one don't go well, your watch "breaks". The cost of "fixing" your watch (in your case $2100 and $1800) is simply the value of the itty bitty gold pieces they're demanding before they will get back to work.
