Someone convince my wife...please!
I joined TRF five months ago and have since been a daily visitor, gathering information, and relying on the expert advice of its members. I've started a few threads and responded to many others during that time and I've come to the conclusion that when I'm ready to buy my first Rolex that it should be from one of the trusted sellers on this forum. My wife disagrees. She believes that going to an AD is the only way to guarantee authenticity and the only option when it comes to a purchase of this size even if it means paying more, and in some cases, much more, plus sales tax.
How do I convince her otherwise? When I respond that the TRF sellers having a long track record of lower priced sales to rely upon she wants to know how they can afford to discount the price of a watch when many AD's will not offer one. Honestly, I don't have an answer. How do they do it? And what argument(s) can I use to convince her that, when the time comes to buy, using a TRF seller would be a safe, secure, and authentic transaction? |

If the wife is set on her opinion and something goes wrong,
that would be an unbearable amount of "I told you so's" Not worth the savings:) |

I would be happy that your wife is onboard with your purchase. Maybe for the second purchase you could revisit this option.

As much as I would like to think so, I'm not sure that there would be a second purchase. I'm 63 years old and retired and pretty much think that this will be my one and only.

Its a tough one. I bought my first from an AD with my wife present and to be honest it was a really enjoyable experience for both of us. 5 star treatment, glass of champagne etc. Not something you get with the trusted sellers. However only you can decide how much the 'experience' is worth in terms of money.
In terms guaranteeing authenticity I would not hesitate to buy from a trusted seller here. I bought my WG Sub from DavidSW with no regrets. My advice would be: Do what you are told by your wife. Works for me most of the time! |

In the final analysis, "Yes dear" always works best.

One thing to remember is that most reputable sellers here or anywhere else online will give you a grace period of X number of days to return the item for a full refund for any reason. When the watch shows up, take it to the AD/appraiser and get your insurance appraisal and authentication at the same time. If it turns out to be a scam, send it back.
There are a handful of extremely well known and highly regarded sellers here that I know from experience do not deal in anything but the straight truth and genuine products. But I do understand your wife's hesitation on a purchase this large. Do your homework and go with your gut feeling in the end. If a seller doesn't return my private messages or emails or texts, I move on to someone else who has what I want. I realize we are all busy in life but if you're wanting to make money and build a stellar reputation, you get back to potential customers ASAP, period. That's just my opinion. |

Telling her the extra money you save
May be enough to buy her a new bag or pair of shoes may go a long way. Serious though, I have bought from DavidSW and got the AD treatment without the AD price. Good luck either way.

you ask the question of how can they offer such a discount when an AD will not offer you one.
Simple answer if you purchased 100's of watches from an AD each year i'm sure they would give you a solid discount as well. Authorized dealers decide what discount they will offer, it has nothing to do with Rolex. that being said if these trusted sellers ever sold a fake there entire business would crumble. |

I'm afraid I have to go against you all.
What kind of wife doesn't listen to her husband, specially when he's right? |

Most wives, Mon. The husband is never right when it's the wife making the contrary argument.

Have your wife read this thread in its entirety.
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=388129 IMO this should be made a sticky because of how many times it asked. |

Tell her that the trusted sellers here have relationships with ADs that allow them to buy watches in large quantities for an very good discount. You and her have the ability to check references here for just about all the well known guys who sell watches here on a consistent basis. I bought my Hulk here from seller "jizeal" and saved a bunch of money and had the watch delivered right to my door next day after the bank wire. I also have the warranty card from a US A.D. with my name on it dated the day of purchase. These sellers probably would be willing to talk with you and your wife about a prospective purchase to put your minds at ease. Many here including myself will not waste the hassle and extra money buying the A.D. route again. What are you in the market to buy?
p.s. I see that you reside in N.Y. So sales tax is what 8% there? For every 10K you spend that's 800 dollars in sales tax. Go the trusted seller route and you pay none! On top of the price discount. Last edited by Sublover2166; 15 January 2015 at 03:06 AM.. Reason: Added to post. |

I think you should just show her the recommendations for some sellers on here. if she doesn't take to it then AD route it is.
Just don't rush into it, be firm with the dealers and know your ceiling for typical discount. |

If it is going to be your one and only, let her have her way and go the AD route. I thought I might loose my happy home over my Patek purchase until Ken came along and sold her on the merits of having the 5070!

One of the three things I learned very early:
Happy wife, happy life ! I will pay the extra money to make sure I don't get the "I told you so" in my ears ! Cheers. G. |

You could always buy from a trusted seller like DavidSW and then take it to Rolex Service Center in NYC since you are in Brooklyn and get it authenticated to ease your wife's mind.
