new DJ owner with some questions
Hello all,
My fiancee and I recently got our first rolex at a AD in New York (mine DJ 36mm and hers DJ 31mm) and have a couple of questions. 1. The date change on mine occurs in about 5~10 mins after midnight, but my fiancee's changes after 20~30mins after midnight. Now I would think that the date not changing on the dot is maybe usual, but is it usual that this occurs this late? Also, why does this delay occur? When setting time manually it changes on the dot. 2. Both DJ are supposed to hold a charge of 48 hrs. Haven't tried on mine since I always have it on, but on my fiancee's the charge time seems to be just a little over 24hrs maybe 30hrs, which seems to be a lot less than the said 48hrs. Is this also normal? 3. Regarding winding. After the watch has come to a stop due to not wearing for more than 30hrs, do you have to manually wind it 20~40 times before wearing it like it was done the first time? Because just picking it up starts the second hand movement again, so was wondering if that was enough. Sorry if any of these questions were handled before, but I couldn't seem to find the exact answers to these. Thank you for your responses in advance. Regards, |

Hi buddy!
Did you purchase both of these watches brand new? If so I would take them back to your local AD under warranty. In my personal experience, Rolex always change over at midnight within a few seconds 20+ or - If you are experiencing 5-10 minute delays, or as mentioned your fiancee's 20-30 minutes delays, something is definitely wrong. A cause of this is normally if you adjust the date using the quick set function (position 2 on the crown) whilst the hour hand is between 8:00 and 2:00. The cog to change the date engages between these times, and as a result of this, the date will start to change off sync with midnight as you are experiencing. With regards to the power reserve - To fully wind the watch its 40 full turns of the crown. If the watch is worn daily it will not stop. On a full 40 turn wind the watch should hold its power reserve for approximately 48 hours off the wrist. If you come back to wear the watch after 48 hours, it will be stopped, you will then need to fully wind the watch a further 40 times to fully charge the spring. (A side note, if its a modern Rolex, you can't "over wind" it as such, so if you are ever unsure of its charge, you can give it 15 or so winds, no harm at all. The winding mechanism is fitted with a clutch that will slip if the spring is fully charged). I hope this answers all of your questions! Kind regards, Dino

2. No, a 31mm DJ uses the smaller 2235 movement which has a 35 hour reserve. It will only have full reserve if it is fully wound, not generally when it is simply taken off and set down. 3. You should always wind your watch after it has fully stopped. I would also wind mine if I had left it off for the day to get the power torque up into the range when it is most accurate.

Hello all,
Thank you for your answers. It helped a lot. So 1. Dino, Yes we bought it new at an AD on 5th ave NY, however, we bought it while we were on vacation so can't really take it back to the same AD.. I've looked at the link provided by rmfnla, although it seems that it's no big it does seem unusual the 20~30min. However, we've decided that as long as it's not a defect on the watch itself we can live with it since we won't be really looking at our watch for date to change except for one day in a year lol 2. Tools, thank you for this information. This makes us feel a lot better cuz we tested again on hers and it is holding the 36hrs. I also tested mine and it held for 48.5hrs which is great. (It was painful to not have it on for 2 full days hehe) 3. One more question regarding this.. Let's say for the 31mm DJ you wind it full 40 turns and leave it unworn for 30hrs, it has not stopped yet so you wear it for the day and take it off again at night. Is the power reserve after this reset back to 36hrs? or is it only the 6hrs that should have been left over ? Sorry i ask these questions is just that woman tend to wear their watches less.. Thank you again for sharing your expertise experience. And below is a pic of my DJ. |

Your DJ is beautiful, by the way.
I'm not totally certain of the answer to your question regarding the 31mm that you just asked, however, my guess would be that the watch would be back to full reserve after being worn for that day. Someone please correct me if I am wrong....

Hi, elkaholic
Thank you for compliments :) Yes my basic question is for any watch.. if the watch has not come to a complete stop even if it was not worn for 1+ day can you just wear it a day and say that the watch got its full charge back again? |

No problem-I've always liked the fluted bezel DJ on a jubilee. I have a TT one myself. Years ago I had a SS model exactly like yours but with a black dial. Very comfortable.
I have always just put mine back on and wore it if it is still running, even after it's been off my wrist for 24hrs or a bit more. I've not ever noticed an issue with doing this, except for when my DJ was due for svc a few years back and I noticed it stopped running before the 48hr mark came to pass, even though I had it on.

No, no, no..... It never "resets" to 36 hours just because you put it on your wrist. It is activity that winds the watch. I might say that you cannot put a full 36 hours of wind into your watch by wearing it for only a few hours. In fact, most people only put around 20 hours or so reserve (power above enough to keep it running) with wearing alone, and your watch will actually wind-down to that value eventually. You must take into account that it also used power during the time you have it on. You can see by the math that if you are inactive but wearing your watch, it will stop on your wrist because you may not be putting more power into it than it is using. My advice would be that if you had it off your wrist for 30 hours, wind it before putting it on. Your watch will enjoy that.
