Hello All!

Just a quick question for you guys: Why does it "click" sometimes when I wind up my Datejust? I've never encountered that before. It has always been smooth when I wind it up, but the other day it got a little rough and clicked a little. There couldnt possibly be anything wrong it since I rarely wear it.

I don't know what the click could have been. Are you sure you weren't accidentally changing the time and the date clicked over?

The slipping clutch inside the mainspring barrel may sound like it is clicking as it slips around when fully wound..

Depending on the age, this might also indicate that the assembly needs grease..

However, if you really have to concentrate to notice your "click", there is possibly nothing wrong at all..

Not to hijack the thread but I have a really dumb question. I never wind my watches. I just adjust the time, twist it around a couple times and wear it. When you wind, do you turn it clockwise, counterclockwise, or back and forth?

Pull the crown out one stop and wind clockwise.

Welcome to TRF, Barry!

I experience the same thing on my Rolex watches. As Larry states, the clicking noise often occurs when the the watch is fully wound and you keep winding.

Great, I have learned something today then. So if fully wound, it will damage the insides if you continue to wind it? Or does the movement simply not allow it to be wound more?

All modern automatic movements have a built-in slipping clutch mechanism that prevents over winding of the movement.

No damage will happen since there is a safety clutch preventing overwinding. So you can wind it to your heart's content without doing harm to the movement. However, when you've given the crown about 40 full turns, there's really no sense in winding it further since by that time the watch would be fully wound.
