Rolex Noob FAQ Sticky?
I don't know why I haven't brought this up earlier but it seems like lately there has been a huge surge of redundant threads in the Rolex General Discussion (f2) subforum. I know this is not a new phenomenon, but I was thinking that we could make a sticky post that could be continually updated to cover questions that new members always seem to ask. This would cut down on the number of new threads members/mods would have to sift through on a daily basis. I don't know if people don't know how to use the search function or are just too lazy to be bothered but either way, I think this would help.
I know there is an FAQ in the Reference Library but I hasn't been updated in years and most newbies seem to post their questions here in f2 anyways without bothering to look there first. I'm thinking more along the lines of a list of questions with links to the multiple threads discussing that topic. There are a lot of questions asked here that don't have a simple answer but have been discussed ad nauseam over the years. I would volunteer my time to put something together. Thoughts?

As a Rolex noob myself (one of the many who has yet to buy my Rolex), and as one who has been loitering a lot around these forums recently, I can say that a FAQ sticky of the kind Joe describes would be really helpful and much appreciated. I obviously can't speak for all of my fellow neophytes, but I think it's a great idea. Good thinking.

Not really sure if this type of thing would be that helpful. What would be helpful though is if someone could tell me whether or not it's ok to expose my Submariner to minor condensation, or even light rain? Maybe we could start a new thread on that...because (although I haven't searched the forum) I doubt anyone has asked this yet!!!

OK then.
Try it as a standard thread. Bump it up occasionally to keep it current. If it gains any sort of traction, we can easily make it sticky and remove bumps to clean it up. I'll refrain to comment since I've been here for so long and know how blind people can be.

The problem is that Stickies are annoying for you ALWAYS have to see them. Rather have a redundant post that just ends up in the bin of history after an hour.
So far we have a limited amount of stickies… TG. |

If people asking similar questions repeatedly drives you from the forum, I think that's a little melodramatic.
Can threads you've seen before not just be ignored?

Very few people seem to read through entire threads, or even the first post thoroughly enough to check the date. That's why we have people answering five-year old questions or offering suggestions for purchases that were decided in 2011, whenever an old thread gets bumped. A catch-all sticky would be just another ignored thread, IMO. Who's going to read through several pages in the hope their question may be answered, when they can just post a new one.
As mentioned above, you don't have to read every thread that comes along, much less take part in it. |

Do we want to be a Forum for discussion, or an on-line encyclopedia where you just click on the sticky you want.. Or do you want a sticky of FAQ's that is 50 pages long where nobody reads through it... Most read the original post and then tack on their comment, regardless if it's been said a hundred times...

I haven't been on the forum that long but also do notice there's a ton of repeated continuous questions that keep getting asked. It would be nice to have a sticky that deals with continuous trusted seller questions.
I came here and spent many many hours reading old threads educating myself in the beginning and still do. Some questions I feel some people either dont know about the search feature or are just plain lazy and want to be spoon fed. The valuation questions are IMO the very Lazy category! Those I no longer even click on. So I now kinda cherry pick my responses and dont click on or answer the same continuous questions. Its a matter of choice. |
