RO 15400 ?Durability

Hi all,

Looking into the RO 15400 for my first big splash. I really want something I can wear without constantly fretting over it. I'm wondering how durable is it? Been hearing how its quite easy to scratch and ding.
I'm a big fan of the sea and beaches, to the people who have/had experience with RO, what do you think about using this daily and on vacation??

Thanks guys

I've been wearing my 15300 3-4 times per week and it's a fine daily driver. I rotate my DJ2 the other days, which has taken a heck of a lot more abuse. You will be fine as long as you're not putting the watch under extraordinary strain.

You can wear it everyday but will have to be comfortable living with the wear and tear. Some can, others can't bare it. I personally wear mine in rotation with 4 others.

It's a delicate watch when compared to a rolex or tudor.... But oh so gorgeous.

I would get the diver for daily, more casual and no problems at the beach.

The 15400 is gorgeous but I just don't know how a leather strap watch would be a good fit. Unless you are getting the bracelet

An AP diver or 15400 will visibly scratch up quite a lot more than say a rolex sub. This is due to the nature of the finishing. Either accept it or budget for refinishing or look elsewhere :)

I like mine, but if you are worried about scratches and dings then look elsewhere, I am a careful owner, but at some point a door or something minor will travel past you and a ding will result. They are a big and classic watch and worth the ownership experience.

Don't do it - buy a sub instead. I love my 15400 and wear it in rotation but it's no beach wear watch

Thanks for the advice guys. I had a look at both of them side to side. The RO is stunning.. But seeing it will be my first foray I will actually get a Sub. Definitely will have an RO in my collection in the not so far future!

I wear a 15202 all day every day. It's not a sub but not sure why so many people believe it belongs untouched in a museum. You'll be fine.

As others have said, it'll scratch more, but it's more than capable (and built for) daily wear.

Tougher watch then a lot of people realize. I think we all tend to think of this watch as "fragile" because of the finish. It is actually as tough as a sub without the water resistance.

I wear my 15400 everyday...and the scratches are there but...you will get scratches on all steel watches at some point...even on a rolex sub. At the end of the day...the watch still bends bends light amazingly.

There is really one way to not get scratches on a watch...it's to not wear it...

I'm a beach head...so would I wear it to the beach...prob not...as i prefer to not have a watch tan line...that said...i think the sand could add a ton of hairline scratches over the brushed steel.

A white ceramic diver AP though...that's the perfect vacation beach watch in my book.

I just bought mine 15400 black dial. Don't you guys think it is not good for the beach? I mean, vacations in St. Barths, etc. Is it because the external part or also because the machine which is fragile ?

Only due to the delicate finishing of the case and the poor water resistance. You would not swim in it.

I've had the 15400 and was concerned about the same thing. I flipped it because the 41mm felt big on my wrist for a non ROO model, but not because of it's delicateness. It's a robust watch, but yes the surfaces will scratch easily. That's the nature of the beast.

Some think that the ROs look bad with some wabi, but I disagree. If you see photos of some of the pieces from the 70s and 80s, the scratches reach that critical mass eventually that makes a Royal Oak look super awesome. Like a worn battleship. I think it's getting to the edge of that critical mass that is the sting. I've seen quite a few photos of ROs on this site with scratches all over the bezels and bracelets. I think it looks great!

If the watch sings to you, buy and wear it with gusto.

Thanks. You mean, I can't swim deeply or also 1..2 meters as well? No swimming pool? Just need to know how fragile it is .

It's fine for light swimming. I would not take it diving but it will take everyday water activities.

I'd go SD4000 or PP Aquanaut on rubber.

All watches will get scratches, particularly at the beach, be it a sub, SD, 15400, etc.

Best thing I've found is a true beater if needed like a Seiko black monster, or better yet, a G-shock.

I wear mine a lot, but I have a Seiko Monster for beach/mtn biking days. Buy it, take it to the beach but wear it when the activities aren't getting rough.

Yeah....frankly I think it's a bit too dressy for a swimming pool, a Diver or Sub or something like that would be better for this...

Being an owner of 15400 I can say:
1. I wear the watch almost on a daily basis, to work (not an office job, hands on engineering, sometimes working with tools). I consider it a fine daily wearer, you just need to be aware that it is indeed a scratch magnet - I manage to put a little scratch on the polished bezel part - just with my fingernail
2. Never tried and probably would try to swim with it as it is rated to 50m - beach - yes, but no water activities

One more thing - I noticed that my watch gains time irregularly (one day, say +6s, another may be +10s) - may be caused by activities I am performing at work however it never happened with 116520 or BLNR - these two always gained same amount irrespectively of activities and other variables.
