Modular Chronograph techy question

Hello,
I have a 25721 that is running fast and its getting ready to go in for service. My question is, when I sync up the chronograph seconds with the normal seconds, they stay in sync. Im just trying to figure out if they are linked in some way? I was under the impression that they were 2 separate modules?
Thanks,

I think when you click the chrono button it drops the modular gear on top of the running seconds wheel thus sinking it up but I am just assuming that based off watching my speedy pro from the exhibition back side function.
