Life is fragile

Sorry for the morbid post, but much has happened over the last few weeks and months. And I might have just realized how short life can be.

A relative is in the hospital; stage 3+ cancer and still hanging in there. The girl across the bed, who was able to walk and talk on Mon/Tues last week... was no longer to walk on Thurs, and the bed is now empty. She was 23. Lee Kuan Yew passed this morning at the ripe old age of 91. I also found out this morning that a friend I had known for over a decade succumbed to dengue- he was in his 40s. His son, also admitted for dengue, was discharged and isn't even 10 years old yet. Another friend, 39, cancer in one kidney, so had to have it removed.

I think I'm at a loss for words.

Massive changes for the worse happen at lightning speed, you never see it coming, it happened to my wife at 36 yrs old when she was diagnosed with a cancer, three years ago with a 1 1/2 yrs old and a 3 1/2 kids. It shook us up pretty bad but got through it, thank god, but are reminded of it every few months with follow up appointments with the oncologists. Life is indeed very precious and you realize all the small petty things that make people crazy is ridiculous. I pray for those affected have strength and courage to deal with their new normal.

Life is fragile

Sorry to hear. Just remember this, The Lord (sorry if this is not politically correct) will never give you more than you can handle. This got me thru loosing my mother at 49 when I was 20 years old.

We had a memorial service for my wife's cousin a couple weeks ago. Hung himself due to PTSD after 3 tours in Iraq/Afghanistan and not being able to get his life together after getting out of Army.

As an Atheist I often envy people who have belief systems that are a big support to them in times of trouble. My philosophy of life is that it is very random and you don't get what you deserve - you just get what you get.
I try to be grateful for every day and find a positive in even the sad things.
I believe that lifes big challenge is to do the best with what you get.
In Rolex terms, this is about really enjoying the ones I have, not being too focused on the next one but celebrating it when/if it happens.
Whatever your belief system Won, I hope it helps you to make sense of those issues.

I'm feeling this very much at the moment. I haven't been on the forums for awhile as my wife fell from a deck several weeks ago and broke her neck. Talk about your life changing in an instant? In one phone call I went from having my life pretty much under control to being told it had all fallen apart. I'd have a close call and think, "Wow. That could have been the end." many times in the past. I went from having the most capable, vibrant wife you could imagine to looking at having to feed her by hand for the next 40-50 years. Is life fair? If you knew her, you would definitely say 'no'. Can your life change in an instant? You betcha. Cherish your time with your loved ones. You never know what may happen.

Matt

Very sorry for your life today experience myself health-wise have a ongoing battle over the past two years or so, the quotation in my signature brings life today into perspective. Material things mean little for me now,and the most important thing for me at the moment is very simple. Is that everyday I beat my own previous record for number of consecutive days I've stayed alive. And the most precious thing we have in this world is life, yet it has absolutely no trade-in value, but we are all born to die.

I'm sorry for your family's loss.

I had three tours in Iraq/Afghanistan as well, and in many ways the transition out of the military was harder than the deployments. It's difficult to understand unless you've experienced it yourself.
