Submariner help
I am going to get a lot of laughs a stupid of a question this is but here goes!
I do not know diddly squat about Rolex watches and I need some advice. My wife called me and said she wants to get her dad a Rolex Submariner for his birthday because its always been a dream of his to own a Rolex Sub. He has done so much for her she is just trying to give him a nice watch before he passes. He has always talked about them and how beautiful they are since I married my wife 21yrs ago. I am looking on here and Chrono24 and will probably jump on the cheapest one I find. But is there a particular model number that’s generally cheaper? This doesn’t have to be like new or even have a date. Just trying to get pointed in the right direction and get the least expensive one I can get. Sorry for the stupid question |

You won't pay under 3k for a sub. I bought a no date non-COSC for 3k but it needed some work. If you want a date they're about 4k-ish. Stick to the 1990's Subs in that range are reasonable and not considered vintage.

I'm new here but from the little I know, the cheapest Sub would be a no date, black face in steel. Not sure what the model number is. Someone will put it up.
That's about all I can add. Good luck. By the way, a Rolex is a very nice gift. to your wife. |

Yea, I am honestly expecting to spend about $3000-$3500...I know that when he passes, I will get the watch back. But since I am buying my wife a new Microdermabrasion machine for her business, I need to be as cheap as I can (yea I know that sounds bad).

Yes, i have been a member since about 2012, and own a Sub and own my original Datejust that I bought in the PX in 1986 in Germany. ....That does not make me an expert at prices like the members here. I just bought the watches because I wanted them and thought they were good buys.....I know, that makes me stupid!

Im just being honest. yes, I own 2 Rolex watches, and yes, I do not really know anything about them....I put my sub on my wrist and go and has never failed me.
Im just asking for help in which model of Sub to be looking at, or are they all going to be pretty much in the same price range. |

Probably an early 1990s 14060 will be cheapest in general. Who is it for? Your post doesn't make it clear.

I really think it is going to be near impossible to find a Sub for the $3-3500 range. $5,000 plus would be more realistic. Good luck and good hunting!

Sorry but you will not find a Sub for that price range. Maybe a beater that needs lots of new parts but not a nice piece that you would want to give to someone as a gift. Figure at least 4K USD

Lately all of the 14060s I've seen are mid $4k range unless they need a lot of work. I saw one for under $4k but it had unknown service and no bracelet.
I would go with a 14060 or a 16610 and try to find one from the late 90s or early 2000s. Both are timeless classics IMHO...with the 14060 a bit more on the "classic" side. |

I've seen a cpl in the $3600-$3800 price range on Chrono24....I'm just hesitant to buy from a "trusted" seller on there. Maybe im just being too cautious |

I think if your patient and find a motivated seller you can get a good deal. I bought my S serial ND Sub here on TRF a few years ago, I understand prices fluctuate, for 3k. It was no beater but it did need to be serviced.
So in today's market for 3600-3800 might get you what I got back then. A good watch but it properly is going to need a trip to the spa.

There are plenty out there, so take your time looking. With patience, you'll find a great one, and I'm sure will be happy.

I found a no date 14060z on Watchseek for $3650 being offered by a LEO in Houston and a 16610 date with box and papers from seller Ponycar350 for $4099.00
I may just wait to see if something else comes along.... I'm sure I may regret that decision Here is my beater I bought for $4950.00 2 yrs ago |

I have $5k set aside just in case. I will just be patient and see what I can find. The more I save the better I will be because the Microderm machine I'm buying my wife is gonna run about $5k

I getting ready to pull the trigger on a sub in the near future.
At first I wanted one on the cheaper side. However after some research it became clear that a cheaper one would probably need to be serviced and polished. Maybe even a new bezel or something. At that point its probably better to just get one around 5-6k. I'm now at the point of considering a BNIB 116610 from a trusted seller here on TRF. How I went from just wanting any sub to a new 116610 I have no clue... I think I spend too much time on here reading!!!! |

Perhaps give your father in law your sub and get your self another one. I think it'd be a great gesture on your part and will definitely go a long way with the wife. Just a suggestion. And if you decide to source one, I highly recommend the TRF sellers on here.
