Anyone for Cricket??????

Woohoo Summer must be here, the footie season winds down and the cricket season begins.

You guys probably don't know (or care) but the First Test series against New Zealand started at Lords yesterday!!!!!

Nothing better than lazing on the sofa with a few beers and the cricket on all weekend!!!!!! Well maybe sitting in the garden listening to it on the radio whilst the barbie smokes away!!!!

Anybody here interested in the thwack of leather on willow????

Do any of our American pals understand our love for a game that takes five days to play and even though a team could score 500 or more points, still lose??????!!!!!!!???????

Haven't got a clue!

I have seen the game played for 5 mins and gave up. It's Baseball on crack! I would love to understand it but catching a game here in the States is not common. Clue us in...

Your right it can be a bit of an acquired taste.
Things have changed a bit. There are several variations of this great game.
If you get chance to watch any of the 20-20 matches you will see its a lot quicker game with time limits for bowling and a few other things. Plenty of music, cricket balls hit out of the ground often.
Its good, safe and cheap family entertainment.

Like I said if you get chance try and watch at least 1 20-20 match, you may be surprised.

Here, once it's spring/summer time we keep hearing how the national team is winning too many matches that turns them arrogant with all kind of bad manners.

Now with most of the good players retiring or retired, last summer they barely won India. The tune starts to change, saying rejunvenation or change of guard etc.

However, I'm still confident they'll retain the Ashes next time

Yeah, especially the last match when Kevin Pieterson held off the Aussies for several hours at the last day. I was hoping they could bowl him out but alas!...

Love cricket, each summer when I was a young kid I used to go to the Scarborough cricket festival and get the autographes of all the famous players, Sobers, Cowdrey, Edridge, you name them I had them in my little book, the only one that wouldnt give out his autograph was Trueman, once barged me to the ground and just walked on me as though I wasnt there, I was probably 9 or 10 at the time, he was no gentleman.

I like following Test Cricket, although following England is an up and down emotional experience ..........mostly down.

The BBC's cricket radio commentary is legendary especially when they talk about cake.......I know difficult to understand.....very English.

One of the most famous quotes was by Brian Johnston "The bowler is Holding, the batsmans Willey" - for the next few moments all that was broadcast were giggles & laughter from the rest of the commentary team & Brian.

I saw the West Indian fast bowler Michael Holding whose nickname was "whispering death" at Sussex CC as a kid in the 1970's. He got the name for his running action which was so smooth he seemed to glide over the grass on his extremely long run up. The batsmen were scared to death of him - he bowled so fast it was difficult to see the ball until it was in the wicket keepers hands or if had bowled a bouncer had hit the batsman. A lot people just gave up their wicket.

The West Indies teams of Clive Lloyd & Viv Richards were the most exciting and compellingly dangerous sides I have ever seen - truly awesome.

It will be interesting to see how cricket changes in the next few years with the big money backing 20/20 is getting especially in India.
As usual England is lagging behind the pace of change

I think one day game will give way to 20/20. Test cricket will still be there. You just can't take away the requirements of concentration, tactics, endurance from the long game.

I hope you are right, but the world wide crowds have diminished in the past few years. 20/20 is growing incredibly fast and has big money backing and is a real threat to the governing bodies. Very interesting few years ahead.

All we seem to get on TV now is cricket from India
Quite strange seeing players from all over the world participating in a domestic Indian competition.
India must be absolutely obsessed with cricket, and the money paid by India's wealthy to fund their teams and the competition is off the clock.

Old KP reckons he's off there next year....won't be long before all our others follow.

Be interesting to see whether the American premier league Cricket will go ahead....be a massive blow to the new Indian game!

I'm not sure who KP is, but the face of cricket is changing rapidly with 20/20, Indian $$$ and now the U.S.A.

I do like to see Australia play, and I like it more to see them lose, just because it makes the game much more interesting. Also I feel the Aussies are arrogant and need to receive a few lessons

There definitely is a lot more action in 20/20 and it might just be the form of cricket to sell the sport in the U.S.A.

Oh that KP Yeah he is a great player, and he can really give the Aussies a run (or two) for their overs.

I love cricket and as I only live 1/2 hour from Canterbury i'll get to see some 20-20 games this summer!
I had a couple of great days out when i was in Aus/NZ many years ago.
Saw Dean Jones hit 146 not out in a ODI at the Gabba. One of the most destructive batsmen i've ever seen.
Then went to the Basin Reserve in Wellington and saw England snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against NZ!!!

Remember that "Silly mid-on and Silly mid-off" really ARE silly. Example:

Those would be decidedly unhealthy positions if they existed in american baseball...

The greatest in-close fieldsman is David Boone, the great Tasmanian. He also allegedly holds the unofficial record for the most number of beers consumed on a flight between England and Australia.

No No No Steve, not arrogant, just positive, they play to win and a lot of the other teams are now starting to catch on and do the same
Me and the boy saw the first 20/20 played in Aus last year here in Brisie, infact it was the first time ever that I have been to a live cricket game and wow, what a spectacle. What with the Mexican waves, beach balls bouncing every where and plastic bottles and beer cups being tossed on us from above, some still with contents, I think I will stick to the tv coverage in the future, much safer.

I was fortunate enough to be hanging out with some Brits and Aussies who played "indoor" cricket against one another(we didn't have the space to play outdoors so we played in a gymnasium). They taught me the game (with special indoor rules) and while I couldn't entirely get rid of my American baseball swing, I got better over time. Big fun if you can laugh at yourself, and deal with everyone laughing at you, particularly when it's your turn to bowl and you have no idea where the ball will end up.
