AD Lying or just wrong?

Ok, I am the first to admit I am not the most knowledgeable watch aficionado, however, it is a passion so I try to absorb as much as I can, and my knowledge base is probably slightly higher than your average walk in customer. Today I walk into a Rolex AD here in South Florida to browse a few minutes while my wife is running a couple errands in a store next door. The salesman tries to get me to try on the "new" Yachtmaster, so ask him which new model he means, he tells me the blue dial one, and I ask him what he thinks of the one just shown at Basel. He then proceeds to "inform" me of all the details, except he was way off on the case size (said 44 mm) and price (said $38k, US). I let the "rubber" strap comment slide (elastomer, but I digress) but felt I had to correct him on the price and case size. He disagreed with my information when I asked him if he was sure about the price, and added it will be very rare and hard to get. I was so turned off I couldn't hang out any more and left, and I won't be returning. My question is, do you guys call someone out when they are either so irresponsible with data or do you just chalk it up to another poorly informed, manipulative salesman and leave? I find it offensive that an AD would be so irresponsible with basic data.

I am typically not the type to say "let it go" regarding my watches, but regarding sales people I would almost always advise to let it go. There is no way the AD sales people share the passion their customers have, yet they stand self proclaimed "experts".

There are so many options for places to purchase these days, you should not let one ignorant sales person frustrate you. I typically go to try on watches on get them in hand, never to receive the opinions of the sales people, and never to expect an education.

This happens all the time. Cars sales is no different.

You would hope that the salesperson has the same level of passion and interest we all do for watches but the bottom line is sometimes they just don't. I myself would point out that they are incorrect but not in a condescending manner of course. I will say that if you are working in commission like many jewelry people are... They better know more about the product than the average joe.

I typically just nod my head sarcastically and get away as soon as possible. Happens constantly at car dealers. It amazes me how so many people don't know the product they sell

I was in ad AD one time with a YG 1803 DD and the rep asked to see it and proceed to tell me she thought it was not authentic because it wasn't a quick set. I took it from her and walked out never to return.

This is pretty much it.

With all the resources at our fingertips today, we really don't have to rely on sales staff to do much more than give us what we need to look at and handle the transaction if there is one.

I make a little game of asking sales staff questions, just to see if they know anything and sometimes it's worth a chuckle.

Great advice guys!! Helps me keep things in perspective and reminds me this a fun hobby. Chuckling to myself is what I will do next time (along with asking for some water or expresso)!! Exactly right that I am not really asking for an education or lecture, just the opportunity to see the pieces in the flesh. Got to learn to keep my expectations in check. Thanks again.

My local AD sales people have gotten to know me and often ask me questions about Rolex when I'm in the store. I concur that most salespeople don't have the passion that most of us here do but I've never been "turned off" by their lack of knowledge.
I agree with Mike, in that I've already done my research, answered all my questions before I get in there and just expect the polite service they always have provided.

Oh I agree snobbery is totally uncool. I think I was mostly alarmed at the price quote he gave me, not so much his knowledge of design details of the watch itself. Honestly, I don't usually expect a salesman to have read up on the various Rolexes as I have, given that is a hobby of mine. This was the intent of my post, the grossly exaggerated price quote, and asking if others have any ideas as to the reason for such an inaccurate quote. I thought a little irresponsible to be so far off on a price quote, and I don't think that is asking to much from a salesman, to at least know the general price point. Clueless is probably correct.

why would you ever call someone's watch a fake if you were trying to sell them something? Even if someone walked it with the worst fake Rolex in the world, as a sales person, I'd just say like "nice watch, but I think you need to try on this one"

My local jeweler (not AD) offers complimentary adult beverages. Albeit not a great selection (Budweiser and Labatt), I'm not one to turn down a free beer while browsing his selection of pre-owned Rolexes

With regards to an AD making assumptions that a customer is in possession of a fake watch, brings me to recant this event; Having purchased a used datejust with some documentation, it was always at the back of my mind that it may well not be genuine. So I ventured into a local high end watch retailer for 2 reasons, one to verify if the watch was sound, secondly, to have another link put in the jubilee bracelet.
A young female assisstant was first to offer her help and said that as far as she could tel it was ok, but she would get a second opinion from her manager. He looked at the watch, shook it about, looked at it through a jewellers loupe, then declared that due to the lack of an etched crown on the crystal that it was a definite fake.He then tossed the watch unceremoniously into the box and turned away.
The young female employee insisted I take it to another AD, as she was still convinced it was genuine. When I beckoned the manager back over to me and tried to inform him that the model I had predated the year in which Rolex first etched their symbol into the glass, he said it didn't matter, it was still a fake.
Fortunately another, more credible AD had a look at it and confirmed the female's intuition that it is indeed a real one.
The only conclusion I can draw on this, is that just because I look like the type of person who hasn't got two pennies to rub together, doesn't mean I should be treated with disdain.

The watch was just announced a few weeks ago and won't be in stores for months. Seems like a big to-do about nothing, unless you were going to place an order.

Not even a "big to-do," all I asked him was what he thought of the piece, just as a little chat, as he wanted to show me some Yachtmasters. I didn't ask any specific questions about the piece and as I mentioned earlier, he started the data quoting. Believe me I'm not going to lose a minute of sleep over it, just was curious other's experiences. Just was a bit suprised at his price info being so far off.
