Honeymoon or change of taste?

My wife surprised me with a dj2 smooth bezel 116300 one night at dinner. She had seen me look at an AD and made a note of the model i liked the most. The deal with the AD was that if unworn I could return the watch in exchange plus $2,000 for dj2 fluted bezel or exchange dial colour. I liked blue she liked silver. I tried on all the dial options and compared the fluted vs blue. Smooth silver ticked all the boxes so i left with the Silver smooth and my silver dial. Smooth kept catching my eye and i was happy for six months. The last twelve months i keep thinking 'maybe fluted was better' and fluted now sings to me more.

i cant flip this as it was a gift and i will NOT mod the bezel.

Looking at the watch has me thinking .... Was fluted better?

This is not a fluted bezel vs smooth question.

I assume this thinking is what causes watches to be flipped.

Any suggestions? Has one else experienced this?

I have owned both versions of the blue stick dial...both are very nice, but I traded the fluted for the smooth and like it quite a bit more...sportier and more casual for my purposes.

As to the honeymoon issue...it is just a matter of personal preference. If you like the other one better, flip it. I would not keep a watch that I no longer enjoyed (regardless of any perceived sentimental value)...life is too short.

Smooth is sportier while fluted more classical so depends on which look you prefer. I think it is better that watches not be given as gifts to WIS as they tie you into them even after your feelings have changed which is very common for us lot.

I really think it's personal preference. I like the fluted being 18k white gold but prefer the look of the smooth. The fluted reminds me too much of old school Rolexs (some might like it for that reason) and being a younger guy a prefer the more modern look of the smooth bezel. Typically your initial feeling is the true one. Who knows, my taste could change too but if you liked it at first I think you should stop questioning yourself. You might get the fluted and wish you had kept the smooth.

Second-guessing of this kind is a sort of manufactured unhappiness that's especially unnecessary because you like the watch and you're committed to keeping it for good reasons. This is not a decision you need to make any more than I need to decide which bezel you should have preferred six months ago.

If it helps, remember that Rolex will make Datejusts forever and there is nothing urgent about this.

Like Tvall13 mentioned, I also believe its personal preference. I would stay with the smooth bezel.

Love the smooth personally. Great look. For some reason, to me, fluted seems to date a watch over time. For example, older 36mm DJ's look more modern to me with a smooth bezel versus fluted. Just my .02

Personally I prefer the smooth bezel but they both look good to me. The fluted bezel just seems more blingy.. that's all.

Ultimately it's your call. I prefer smooth. I don't see why you don't just search for a bezel and pop it on. Not a big deal really and you'd still have the original.

I think you made the right call.

I'm not a fan of the fluted on the DJ2.

Looks great on the 36mm DJ, but its just too much on the larger version if that makes sense.

Well, first you have to understand, there's no 'better', just 'different'. Smooth and fluted are both awesome, just check out Charles pictures.

As Neil said, it just all depends on the look you're after. Remember this, though, if you allow them, there will always be little second guessing thoughts that say you should have bought the other.

I, too, have had both. Both great. Might give the slightest of edges to the smooth, but if someone gave me the other, no way would I flip it.

I'm in the exact same place as you are. I bought the smooth bezel with the blue dial. I keep thinking maybe I should've bought the fluted.

The fluted certainly catches your attention, but that's exactly what's wrong with it. It's really too large for the watch. The smooth bezel is a "cleaner" design if that makes sense and I believe it will age better. And silver is the right dial too! Great choice!

Had a fluted and now have a smooth. Never thought I would like the smooth that much.

Smooth bezel looks like DDII Platinum, Rolex Flagship. Other than that, I too think the smooth bezel looks better for the DJ2 since it is the 41mm, more sporty nature and thus the smooth sporty bezel a perfect fit.

On the DJ II, I prefer the smooth bezel ... for me, the fluted bezel is too flat and not as crisp as the fluted bezel on the 36 mm. So, I would stick with the smooth on the DJ II.

eh, there's no use second guessing yourself. Why torture yourself, seeing as you won't flip it. You can always add a fluted bezel DJ2 later on. Roman numerals, TT, arabic dial... there are many choices to make a nice addition.

I prefer fluted over smooth, just a preference not something the one is better than the other situation. You may trade it but make sure you wouldn't break you wife's heart if you go into the change
