Sea Dweller 4000 is in my head and I can't unsee it !

I have a Submariner no date 114060 on my wrist, I have been thinking about another model to add, I have been to the AD several times looking at DJII first then Milgauss, every time I'm there I always eyeball the SD 4000, it's just a badass piece, but I really like my SubC so I just push it away thinking it's too similar to what I have. But then it occupies my mind.

So, do I go for the SD 4000 and own both or flip the SubC in exchange for the other ? or just stay with the SubC and hope my obsession with the SD 4000 will pass ?

The SD4000 is a very cool piece, but unless you need the diving extension on the bracelet and the extra depth rating, I think you are better off letting the infatuation with the SD4000 wear off and keep your SDC. I sold my 114060 after I got the SD4000 and sometimes I scratch my head about that decision as it is $2,500 more expensive. Unless you collect dive watches per se, I don't really see the point of having two very similar stainless steel black-faced 40mm Rolex dive watches - too many other great pieces out there to own as well :-)

Did you feel the same way about your Sub before you bought it? Did you think about it non-stop, dream about owning it someday? Did you stop breathing when the watch was first put on your wrist? If you said yes to any of this, then keep your Sub. I definitely think no one needs 2 identical diver watches unless they are used for diving. And paying a good chunk for another watch which is so similar is nutty. If you are looking at a DJII, half the watch would be paid for with the money you would have to fork over for the SD. I do agree with Patrick that there are a lot of other pieces to buy. I have a Sub & a DJ..I feel like I have a great duo.

All the best with your decision. :-)

For what it's worth I traded my SD4k for a Sub C no date - but it was about wrist size for me at the time. My wrist is 7 5/8 and kind of flat so the sub C case was a better fit for me. That being said - I loved the matt dial on the new SD 4k, can't be beat, my only suggestion is to make sure it wears how you want.

I have two Subs and a SD4k, but in my case the Subs are from different eras, so they're not that similar to the SD. If one of my Subs was a ceramic model, I'd probably not do it.

But then again...

Defnitely SD4000.
If you can keep both, great. If not, flip for SD 4000

Get the SDc, have both on hand for a while, and then either keep both or flip the one you can do without. Both have a good aftermarket. FWIW, I personally like having the date. Good luck with the torment!

I have the SubC ND and tried the SD4K. Unless you really need a date - I see no objective point in getting the SD4K. However, this hobby is seldom objective - so unless the craving for the SD4K is just another of those "I like what I do not currrently have" moments, flipp the SubC. My personal guess is that you will do the flip. After some time you will probably miss your SubC ND.

^ I think it's more about the thinner lugs than the date. Personally, I don't really care about having the date on my watch, but I would probably choose the SD4K over the 114060 due to the slimmer lugs/crown guards...

So true.
Many of us have this addiction of searching for a watch.
No matter we are satisfied with what we have, we want more

I have a SubC ND like you and felt the same about the old SD 16600.
Finally bought it and kept the Sub too.

I don't wear the SD at all....

I also considered the new SD and what I can say to myself to not going further is that the new SD is far less classy than the former SD and actual Submariners.
Bezel is too busy and mat dial is a bit more toolwatchy.
Added the heft, I think the SubC is a better wear and forget, all rounder.

I still must say that if I was considering a date diver from Rolex, that would be the SD rather than the SubC.

The Submariner was my first and always to me is the classic, Rolex sports watch. Mine is now 30 years old and a beautiful piece. However, I wear it sparingly. The ceramic Sea Dweller is my daily wear and I find it different enough to justify. I love both. However, I could not have justified a ceramic Submariner (steel) as that would have been too close even to my vintage Sub.

Sub is a cleaner. The chunky lugs are the only negative to the SD4K (some see it as positive since it wears bigger than 40mm). Some personal gripes about the SD4K are the extra markers on the bezel making it too busy, matte dial and protruding crystal making dial look brownish, thick case and caseback making the overall ride height too much for an everyday watch. With the price difference the Sub wins.

Would agree with this - the SD4000 is a super watch and probably one of the best in the current sports range, but apart form the obvious construction and design differences, it is still quite similar to the SubC. If I owned neither and was going for one, I would probably go the extra for the SD4000, but if I alraedy had one of them, I'm not sure I would add the second!

I recently bought a SD4K. Since I have 6.5" wrist, the size works better for me than the Sub.

I have never considered buying a Sub ( just a personal preference, not meant to offend any current Sub owners) , I live and work in New York and Subs are EVERYWHERE especially in Wall street. If you go to Chipotle at lunch time, you will see a line of hands wearing Subs sticking out to pick up their salads. Same goes for the startbucks in the morning.

One of the reasons to own a Rolex, other than its built quality and investment value, is the feeling of exclusivity. A Sub just doesn't do that for me in my environment.

But that is just me.

I keep asking myself exactly the same question: should I flip my Subc ND for the SD4000 that keeps calling to me. So far I managed to stick to the Subc (but added a DJII blue/stick), and 'the problem' becomes less and less. Sweat it out and stick to the sub, it is a great watch (and if it is your first, it has that special thing, at least mine does)
