Count Down Bezel
I've used the search feature for this and was not able to find anything on what I am about to say, so here goes.
I am quite sure that the vast majority of owners of the SUB as well as the DSSD, do not use their Rolexes for diving but on many occasions need to know how much time remains on their parking meters or how much longer their cake or roast needs to remain in the oven. I fully realize that the existing bezel configuration allows for such use but is not as convenient as a count down bezel. However Rolex has not made available a count down model or bezel option. Why is that? Is it a case of sexy trumping practicality or something else? |

Why isn't it just as easy to use as a count down timer?

The sub bezel works plenty well for me...and is all I need in timing all of my life's events. If you're into count down timers, have you seen the YM2?
Maybe you could post a pic of exactly you're talking about? |

Just move the bezel arrow to the spot you want to count down to.

Adam,
I did say that the existing configuration can be used but that it is not as convenient. With the existing configuration if the time is 2:47 and your parking meter has 39 minutes left, you have to make a calculation to determine to place the bezel triangle at 26 minutes past the hour for measuring by the minute hand. With a count down bezel, no calculation is required as all you would have to do is move the 39 position on the bezel to the current position of the minute hand and then the minute hand would count down to the bezel triangle letting you know at any time exactly how much time remained. |

Then put the arrow on 2.47 and wait till the min hand hits 39 on the bezel.

Adam,
That would require you to remember the 39 while doing your errands or at home tasks. It would be easy to forget. The count down bezel doesn't require any computation OR memorization. |

It appears this thread is being removed from the category "Rolex General Discussion".
I don't know why as it is pointing out a problem in the design for the majority of users of the Sub and DSSD and perhaps some other models. |

I think you are missing the point of the submariner. It's a diver watch and the unidirectional rotating bezel is the way to go. I time stuff with it all the time and it works great!

You can flip the rider tabs on some Breitlings for that, perhaps especially 90s Chronomats and Crosswinds. Other than that I'm not sure I've seen many (any?) watches with the count down timer.

Most don't use it for diving. I did not say to change the existing bezel configuration but to make an alternate configuration available for the majority of owners.
My intent was NOT to deprive divers of a necessary piece of equipment. Obviously the alternate bezel or model would have to be appropriately marked so it would never be mistaken for the original. |

Dont be daft Adam the bezel must be left permanently fixed within a cats whisker of the triangle 12 marker .And to the OP just turn the bezel to wherever the minute hand is on the dial then you can time the lapse time as the minute hands turns around the dial.

Buy a JLC Memovox or a Tudor Advisor, or an egg timer!

I see your point but doing a little maths now and then is the best way we all in the iphone/pad/watch/dog generation don't get Alzheimers in the next 10 years.

AK797,
Your comment is easily the best, most thoughtful, of all received so far. Thank you. Most don't even read everything I said. |
