Icon20 Is it alright for a AD to sell me a new Rolex with the dial swapped?

Hi, I am looking to buy a DD. Unfortunately, all my local dealers do not have the stock with all the features I want. Now I found a dealer who has something similar except for the dial. She is telling me she is going to get the dial swapped between two rolexes that she has in stock. Does buying this rolex mean I am not getting the best out of my purchase? I heard it is not a good idea to buy something that is tempered. Also how do I know she really is getting the Rolex Service Centre to do the swap? Also can Rolex track what features a particular serial number has? If anyone got any idea please let me know very soon? Thanks very much for your help.

Perhaps you should check with the RSC in your country to make sure that if you have to send the watch back for warranty work, it will be covered.

Years ago I was in this situation, the AD let me see the dial I wanted in another watch, but then sent the watch I wanted to RSC for the dial replacement. I have been told that the serial number is logged at Rolex, this will identify the case, year manufactured, dial etc.

I am not the most knowledgeable guy around, for sure, but there has been some recent discussion about dial changes. Given this, I think I would be very careful, because if you send it to the RSC, you may just get it back with the original dial Rolex intended for that watch, along with the bill for the new dial?

Good luck!

In the US, that is a NO-NO.....

An AD should NEVER offer to swap a dial out, NEVER EVER..... They are told by RUSA as well to never do this.

Not sure about other places though.

Hi there!

Serial #s, and dial colors are regarded as "pairs" and treated as such only in the US.
Hence the warranty certificates of Rolex USA always indicate the dial color on them as well.

The paperwork (or new plastic ID-cards) of any Rolex as sold to any country
other than the US does not include information on the color of the dial
(unless it comes to the special luxury dials)...

The biggest no-no for things like dial-swaps is hence maintained only by Rolex USA for their own market.

I wouldn't say that it is recommended practice, but I'd say that you would not
have any warranty problems in Australia if you went ahead with the swap...

Afaik, that is...

quite normal to change dials

At my official AD in Denmark it is quite normal to change dials

I believe they would change the dial the first 3 month without any cost

Rolex has so many deferent dials so it can be difficult to those the right first time. And your AD can’t have all different Day Dates at stock

I believe that is more ore less the picture in Europe

In the US, If the dial is available for that model, and it is changed by an RSC or a contracted watchmaker (many AD's have them), then the warranty should still be valid.

It is only invalidated if a "third party" works on the watch, or non-Rolex parts are installed..

Outside the US the rules are different...
