Wallet Help Please

Hello Sirs,

I need a little help selecting a wallet as a birthday gift for my nephew.

He just graduated from Seoul National University (business) last year and has joined the professional workforce. He has indicated his need for a decent wallet, and I want to get him a wallet of high quality that will last him a long time, and that he won't be embarrassed to pull out when buying a round for his colleagues.

However, I know nothing of quality leather products. For me, a Kenneth Cole wallet from Century 21 (a discount store here in NY) is good enough.

What type would you gentlemen recommend? LV? Mont Blanc? I'm not concerned with name brands, I just want good quality.

(Before you all recommend buying him a watch...I wanted to, but his father already gave him a watch for his graduation.)

Thank you!

I have something like this from J Crew that they don't make any more http://www.filson.com/products/secur...aProduct=1011/
A simple leather card holder with 3 slots on each side and a pocket in the middle that I put cash in.

For a more traditional style wallet I would go with Lotuff http://lotuffleather.com/collections...-bifold-wallet or Frank Clegg http://frankcleggleatherworks.com/sh...er-wallet.html

If he is into flashy brands though he may be happier with something from LV, Hermes or even Coach...

Take a look at Goyard. It has quickly become my favorite leather brand. It's very well made, stands up to my daily abuse, and not very many people know the brand. The ones who do are the ones that appreciate it and those are the people you want compliments from. :)

Do a Google search Goyard mens wallet grey

Depends on the type of wallet. Many brands make nice folding wallets. However I wear jackets for work daily (suits and blazers) so I prefer a breast pocket wallet. The one I've been using for years is made by Launer, made in UK. They also make nice billfolds. Doesn't get much better than that.

Lots of great wallets out there. BTW, LOVE Century 21. Used to go down there when I lived in NYC... fun.

I got one from these folks (http://www.bigskinny.net/) that I've been using daily for years and I love it. Holds all my credit cards, my license, and subway cards and stays thin.

For what it's worth, I like Bosca also. I have only had 2 Bosca wallets in 20+ years. I like these credit card wallets:

Montblanc or Dunhill are nice solid choices, or Goyard if you feel you have just too much money right now.

Wow, thanks for all the help guys!

I'll be heading up to 5th Ave this week with this list in hand. Also I've been checking out the sites you've recommended. After looking at all these wallets, I think I have to get one for myself too.

Thanks again, you guys are awesome!

My 2 cents. I have used wallets from Ferragamo, Cartier, Burberry, Carolina Herrera...nothing has lasted as much as the traditional, burgundy Cartier

I agree about Montblanc. My experience has been great with their wallets.

I personally use a Dunhill carbon fiber wallet. It was cheaper than the LV epi leather that I also wanted. Let me see if I can find a photo:

Ghurka or Tumi. Coach if you buy from a Coach store. Sadly, I think they are now selling seconds in their outlets.

Or Lodis, which I have used for a couple of years, and still looks brand new.

I would stay away from the super-high end stuff. Most of it is not full-grain leather, but split or top grain and liable to destruction. Also they tend to attract WAY too much attention when flashed. I have never seen a Bosca product that didn't come apart within a year (and yes, I am referring to all their lines as they have several).

Most important q: what style does he want? Bifold? Trifold? Credit card holder only? Built in clip? ETC

I had this for 5 years and it's still like new http://www.bottegaveneta.com/us/bi-f...6279894qr.html very practical for cards and has a very nice sturdy money clip that have never failed me. four of my friends liked it so much they got the same and are happy with it. Goyard is also nice and can be personalized but that takes time I think.

Wallets are very personal. I had someone give me a wallet five years ago and it's still sitting it the box it came in taking up space in my sock drawer. It will never be used by me.

If your nephew is like me, perhaps a gift certificate to a nice store that carries wallets will work. He can make his own choice.

I use a ferragamo small cardholder. Similar to LV Epi in construction about 250 bucks and very low key. I've done Gucci and LV and wanted something more below the radar but still nice.

I haven't ruled Goyard out though. I'm a sucker for a good brand I must admit.

I'm a college student and I have a coach bifold, amazing quality, have had it 6 years and I just needed a change of pace so I bought a michael kors trifold, which is good quality and much sleeker, but the coach leather feels much more durable and rugged, but the michael kors doesn't hurt my butt when I sit on it. Back pocket comfort is a big deal to me as I usually wear jeans, I'd look at trifolds if he wears jeans, My dad has always sworn by them. I didn't understand until I bought one myself.

Here's my main Montblanc wallet, which is four years old (ignore my Daytona photo-bombing. Such a show-off, it can't help it). I have two others from the same family and they're all pretty solid and have so far lasted several years of being pushed/pulled in and out of pockets (jackets, trousers, jeans etc) and have held up extremely well. I highly recommend them.

As a slight side issue, we had an interesting experience in the MB flagship store in NYC back in 2012; I think it was Madison Avenue, but can't be 100% sure. Sales lady, immaculately presented, was a little snooty with us when we walked in. It was February and freezing cold, I had my Triumph leather jacket and 501s on. It amazed me how much her attitude change when my MB bracelet slid out from under my sleeve when I pointed out the pen in the display cabinet that I wanted to take a look at .

LeatherGoods Connection- best quality, no brand pricing

In my opinion- brand name wallets are mostly marketing, not quality of materials or workmanship.

This company makes products from harness leather, or belting leather, or calfskin with not one scrap of cardboard, rayon, or other filler or divider material- nothing but leather. I have one that is five years old, lives in my hip pocket not my suit coat, and looks like it is only broken in to shape- no visible wear.

Oh- and I paid $55 bucks for it... : o

PS- Have several of their custom belts also...
