Is a Datejust the most common first Rolex?

If not, which one is the most frequently chosen as a "first" Rolex?

My first, Datejust II 116300 SSO just acquired in Paris in March...

I would have to say yes, the Datejust is and followed by the Submariner. I am referring to SS models.

You would think a sub is... but today I saw 3 DJ at church and 1 DD.

I keep seeing DJ all over. Two tone to be exact.

Very likely. Every AD I have been to always had loads more Datejusts than Subs on display.

I would think that a SS DJ is just about the most versatile Rolex you could buy.
Looks good and fits in with anything, anywhere.
The two pictured certainly do.

In my own experience then yes, on the hunt for a 16234 at the moment, my first Rolex purchase from being a strictly Omega man in the past.

I have heard before that the DateJust is the biggest selling Rolex of all time, although I have never heard how many.
I have also had AD's tell me that the number of SS sports watches an AD receives is directly related to the amount of non sports models such as a DJ that they sell. I think this is why Asian AD's probably have such a big collection of sports models that are deemed very difficult to get in the US, because they sell so many non sports models. TT DateJusts are by far the most common Rolex that I see in Thailand, certainly on middle aged or older people.

My first was a DJ, followed by a GMT pepsi. Then came the Sub LV, Explorer II and a GMT II TT..

No real metrics our there, so it's all speculation.

I'd be willing to bet money though that the answer is yes.

I think on the forum it's probably a Sub but overall it would be a DJ.

My first Rolex (in 1997) was a Steel Datejust with fluted bezel and blue baton dial. I loved that watch!

This forum (and others like it) aren't the real world. From what I've seen here the first purchase is often influenced by what is popular on the board, ie BLNR, Sub, Daytona, etc.

I've seen more Subs than DJs, but I've seen a lot of DJs too... Then again the Sub look is so copied that I may have been looking something that just looks like a Sub. And I think it's the increased popularity of the sports watch as well as the loss of standards nowadays as far as wearing sports watches with business and formal outfits.

I think a lot of folks buy Datejusts as their first Rolex for the same reason I did - because they get into this thinking it will be the only Rolex they will ever buy so they are looking for one watch for all occasions. And the DJII seems to do that better than any other model. They really straddle the dress/sport line well. Of course like most, I wound up buying a second Rolex within a year LOL, ahh the addiction!

Not if you are in your 20's or early 30's. Usually in many countries, people finally afford to buy Rolex when they are over 35 or 40 years old and then the obvious daily wear in an office setting would be DJ over a Sub or Explorer II or similar sports watches. But if you are young, I don't think your first watch would be a DJ.

I'd be willing to bet the DJ is the best selling Rolex in the real world.

my first is a ND sub but actually not interested in buying more Rolex watches. Looking for a vintage Omega and used Big Block Tudor 79180. So I'm good.

The first time I walked into an AD the salesman said "let me guess....hmmm....you look like you're looking for a date-just." He was a little surprised when I said "nope...I'd like to see the Milgauss." Based on that I would think the DJ must be the most common, although I would think subs wouldn't be far behind.

Beautiful watch. Personally I prefer the blue stick dial, but yours looks gorgeous.

My first (and only...so far) Rolex was the 16610LV. However, there are some business settings where a DJ is going to be far more appropriate, so, alas, the itch still needs scratching and I honestly believe I shall be acquiring a DJ next...
