Dial swapping

Is it true that the submariner and date just at one time or now even .. Use the same movem't? Would this mean that one could theoretically place a roman white dj dial on a sub?

Although I have no idea what kind of a person would do such a thing.. 😜

Or even think about it.....

The movement has little to do with dial configuration or fit.

pretty sure vintage submariner and datejust dials had the same size dial(atleast for the 1680/1600/5513 models) I'd imagine a Submariner dial would fit on a datejust, but the datejust dial probably wouldn't work on the submariner as the hands might hit the hourmarkers.

as for the movement having little to do with dials fitting, that's wrong. Oyster perpetual dates, datejusts, explorers, air kings, submariners, and sea dwellers all used the same base movement pre 1980 post 1960 the only difference between the movements was the amount of jewels and certification(15xx base cal).

modern, I wouldn't know, but with most of the watches using the same movement still I'd imagine it would work, but again, probably with conflicting hand issues.

The vintage watches used the same base movement (15xx) but the dial OD changed and then there is the date/no date/day-date/ and GMT variants, which call for very different canon pinions, minute and second pinions. In that era, the dial feet were in the same place, so the dial fit the movement; however the dial may not fit the case you want to use. Even 5512 and 5513, which appear the same, have different dial diameters.

Short answer is "maybe"; long answer is "you need to do a lot more research before you try it".
