Selling your first watch?

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick backstory, I bought my first Rolex and watch at age 23 or so. It happens to be a 16710 GMT. I do love the watch but now I am yearning for something else, a Nautilus 5711.

Long story short, I got permission from the wife to try and obtain the 5711 now if I sold a watch. Would you be able to sell your first watch or my 16710 given all things considered. I also have VC but this was a present from my parents so I cannot sell.

It's a hard decision for me given the value of the 16710 now plus sentimental value, I don't think i would be able to acquire another in the future. I could wait about 2-3 years and probably could convince the wife to just buy the Nautilus out right, but Nautilus price just keeps going up!

All opinions are welcome, thanks.

I wouldn't be able to sell my first watch, but it boils down to the person I guess

It would be hard for me to part with a well loved 16710 knowing I'd never get another. I would probably scrounge and scrape for the 5711 and keep the 16710.

Guess it depends on how much you want the Nautilus. You can always re-acquire a 16710 down the road.

Yes I know I could potentially re acquire it. But knowing I paid retail for it, then having to pay possibly 2.5x the value of it later for not "your" first watch. Not sure if I could stomach that.

I would say that if you're not 100% sure, and it sounds like you're not I'd keep the GMT and save for whatever you think that you want. Yes you could replace it later but it won't be the same as you've already stated. Good luck!

In you're situation with such a nice first watch and one that you still enjoy, I would keep it.

I guess the real question is how much does sentimental value play for everyone. Regardless of the watch, if someone offered you 2.5x what you paid, would you sell?

Honestly I would just save for the 5711.
I sold my first watch because I bought it very impulsively. I knew nothing about watches or movements, but I liked the aesthetics of the watch.
Paid around $6000 for a selita movement based watch that had zero history.
Fast forward few months and when I started to really read watches, I got what I consider my first watch, a rolex BLNR.
I would never sell or flip.

Because of the sentimental value, and because I have had it in so many important occasions.

The 16710 + 5711 do make a great combo I must say.

Keep the one you have and save up for the other one. If you sell the one for the other you probably will regret it later on. Then you will have the two you really want with NO regrets!

I did it and have no regrets. The only way I would hesitate is if it was given as a gift from someone or had some other sentimental value. In my case, I bought my first and had no problem parting with it when the SubC came out. YMMV

I wouldn't sell my first Rolex in order to buy another Rolex, let alone sell it to buy another brand.
Save, buy what you want, but to my thinking switching, especially with the history you have with the 16710, would only cause regret.

I don't have the problem of having to ask permission to do anything, but I wouldn't sell my first Rolex and especially a 16710.

Just keep saving until you have enough to buy the watch you want.

I mean if you can get permission.

The Nautilus is one of my favorite watches made, but maybe this article will give you some different motivation. I've been maybe posting this too much lately, but it seems appropriate.

I have sold my 16710 all black bezel which I bought new in year 2001 and regret till now. Don't do it. The chance for you to feel regret is high.

I wouldn't do it.

I still have my first nice watch (k series SD) that I purchased 13 years ago. Haven't worn it for 5+ years but I'll never get rid of it. Too much sentimental value and once its gone I could probably never get it back.

I don't think I could let my first one go, but I am a sentimental sucker. With some patience you could have the new one you want but you can never replace the first one, unless who you sell it to would sell it back to you.

I assign no sentimental value to my watches or pretty much any luxury goods. The only one I can't sell is my 1675 because apparently I wore it when we got married 25 years ago and the Mrs has an attachment to it.

And apparently to me too.

I can't imagine the sale of a 16710 would make much of a dent in purchasing a 5711. I would just save until you could afford the 5711 without having to sell the 16710.
