Does it makes you nervous when a Salesman you are working with wears a Rolex?
I am a Lexus salesman and many of my managers and coworkers are watch fanatics. We had a discussion at work where one of the sales managers thinks that us wearing Rolex and APs etc intimidate customers because they think we charge too much for our cars. He jokingly said we should wear G Shocks to work and leave the nice ones for when we go out (I have a two tone Bluesy sub 16613). My rebuttal was that if someone is buying a $50k luxury car they would feel more comfortable buying from someone who is successful at what they do. I understand this isn't the same if I was selling Kias at some mom n pop location but we are the world's largest volume lexus dealership. What do you guys think? Do our watches turn off customers? We wear suits to work.

For me, I would not mind. As an informed consumer, I think a lot of customers these days know the TrueCar value or something similar, it's not like there is wool to pull over the eyes as much anymore. At least for me, someone who researches the market like crazy before buying something like a car, the sub would not phase me. I would love having a salesperson with such a beautiful watch - I really like the 16613 a LOT and am considering trading 'up' from my 14060M. Just my opinion, I do not think you will get a very unbiased opinion from us here on TRF, but I tried to put my thoughts into ink anyway..
People are unpredictable and surely some will be offput by the watch. We are a bunch of monkeys on a spinning rock - people will act differently to your timepiece for many reasons, and the majority won't notice. If it were me I would probably have a SS sub if I was in your position but if I did have a bluesy, I'd rock the hell outta it! |

In complete disagreement with the OP's superiors. There is nothing wrong with a salesperson wearing a Rolex. In all honesty, Rolex watches nicely compliments suits and the managers at this Lexus dealership should be happy their sales asscociates have good taste and choose to properly represent the brand.

Yes. The average Lexus customer will see the Rolex in a negative light.
They couldn't care less if you're successful, They just want their reasonably luxurious car at the best price...and they will think you're making too much off of the sale... |

I wish that was the case. Most of our sales are "Minimum Commission" deals even when we sell a $100k car because of the internet people shop prices so there isn't a huge profit unless you are buying something very rare or exotic.

I have seen both schools of thought on this one...in some cases it will hurt, and some it will help....probably a wash at the end of the day.
As far as my personal experience is concerned, wearing a nice piece has only helped to open the doors, starting conversation and rapport building with other peers.

If a salesperson I was working with was wearing a Rolex or any other nice watch I would appreciate his/her taste in watches and maybe give them a compliment in hopes they are a fellow WIS. Just because they are wearing a nice watch doesn't mean I'm paying a excessive amount. The price I'm willing to pay for the deal is on me and my ability to research and negotiate.

In Hong Kong even Starbucks baristas wear Rolex, so anyone above that would be expected to really. Success is generally applauded and admired here, rather than distrusted or envied.

I never really though about this till now... But if my sales person had on a Rolex I would unfortunately think he's making a lot on the sales of cars.
I know this is wrong since people obtain watches in different ways... A gift or passed down from a family member. BUT nonetheless, I would still think he or she is just husseling me. |

I would build rapport with a watch enthusiast salesperson, and then manipulate him to get the best price on a car or whatever. |

Selling cars probably wouldn't make a difference..however selling something else or bigger ticket items with higher margins it might. Probably be better to wear an SS model or something under the radar. Cars are a commodity most people already do their shopping before they walk into a dealership or you can just go to the next dealership if you don't like the price. The prices are right on the window. Its not like your holding all your cards as a car sales person. Most people know how much car salesmen already make. There are some sales professions out there where you'd be making 2-3x more than a car salesmen and the customer wouldn't have the slightest clue. In those cases it would probably be better to be discrete with your watch choice.
I think a customer would appreciate if their account manager or sales person had a nice watch on with some sales professions with much longer sales cycles and when there is much more value brought to the table usually a business to business deal. They are spending lots of money and usually making a big change in what they or completely changing a crucial part of their day to day business practices. The sales person is bringing so much value and the customer is paying for that. In that case pulling up in a nice luxury car or wearing a Rolex might give off the feeling that this sales person has many accounts and is a top producer. selling cars is a such a quick process and usually a one time deal between the buyer and seller that it really doesn't make any difference at all if the car salesman is wearing a Patek with keys to a Porsche in his pocket. |

If the salesman is knowledgeable and polite, I'd do business with him, regardless he wears a rolex or not. |

No problem wearing a Rolex as a Lexus or any other salesman. Sales by nature is the art of convincing people to buy your something instead of someone else's and putting your absolute best foot forward starting with appearance. Wearing a Rolex shows respect.

I am a salesperson and I struggle with this myself. I can see it both ways; that some customers might think I'm price gouging to put more money in my pocket where others may think I'm a hard working, polished, sales rep that's got hit shit together. Tough one.

I'm in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry as a salesperson. As you know the cost of medicine is highly scrutinized and the blame always falls back on the drug company. Our customers, which are physicians, constantly complain to me about cost. However, I don't set the pricing. I'm charged with the responsibility of educating healthcare professionals, being a product expert, being a resource and growing sales in my assigned geography. If I do this well, I'm financially rewarded with bonus and commission just like any other salesman. I wear my Rolex watches without any hesitation because I am successful in my career. 99% of the doctors and nurses don't notice or could care less. The few that do notice are usually Rolex owners. For me it's about looking my best and having total self confidence. This is why I workout, watch what I eat, have my suits properly tailored, maintain proper grooming, etc. Its not about wearing an expensive watch, it's about being the best I can be and for me that happens to include a few watches from a brand that I've admired since being a teenager.
