I've Come Full Circle

So my wife and I spent the past few days in Atlantic City at the Borgata to celebrate her 60th birthday. As we're standing in a rather long line at the buffet we strike up a conversation with the couple behind us who appeared to be about our age. Of course I check out the gentleman's wrist and notice his watch which happened to be a 36 mm Datejust with white stick dial, smooth bezel and oyster bracelet. Honestly, it was not a watch I had considered previously but I was instantly smitten. It's got such a classically clean look, is easy to read, and can dress up or down for any occasion. When I first started to seriously consider a Rolex about a year ago the DJII was the very first one I was serious about. Since then I've had other favorites but seemed to always come back to the DJII in my mind without considering the smaller Datejust. It just seems to tick all of the boxes for me. I've tried on the DJII in the past and although it's a beautiful watch I just can't get past the size of the bezel which seems out of proportion to me. I only have a 7" wrist and although the DJII looked fine on me I think the 36 mm will look even better. I do like the jubilee bracelet very much too which is a choice that is not offered on other models.
There's definitely another trip to the AD on the horizon to give it a try with the goal to have it on my wrist by April 2016 for my 65th birthday. Let's call it a gift to myself and my own "Lifetime Achievement Award".
By the way, the birthday girl won herself a few bucks.

As much as I am a sucker for the sports models and their history, I realize every time I try on a 36mm Datejust on jubilee , I see perfection.

You got that right. I kept thinking, "why couldn't the DJII be a little bit smaller?" It was practically staring me in the face the whole time. Talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees.

dj 36mm

Congrats on the upcoming birthday Angelo. My perspective on the 36mm datejust is very similar to yours. I used to think it was a small watch for old men. Then I turned 50, and I saw this picture of a young Harrison Ford wearing one- these two events sealed the deal for me. So I picked up an inexpensive but cool datejust 1603 white dial on a jubilee... It's a keeper...

Thank you. I wish I looked like Harrison but I'll settle for the watch. 😉

I recently had my 16013 set back as it was originally made and what a difference it makes in my perception of the watch; pure beauty.

I agree that it's hard to beat the classic Datejust.
Four years ago my business partner and I were opening our car lot and he gave me a similar watch and I gave it to my bookkeeper. I snubbed it! Now I see it on his wrist and I wish I had it in my rotation. My main watch is my P Serial 16610 and my Pam 111 and a couple of beloved Seiko Divers that are all 40mm or more. I'm beginning to see the classiness of the classic 😎
I know I rambled a bit, however it this thread made me really want to fire on a white faced Roman numeral model.

Happy to see a lot of love for this watch at a time when the trend is for larger pieces.

Very true. Love the classic look. I went through my big watch phase in my 20s. I'm over it. This watch has survived many fads.

The Datejust is just about as perfect as a watch can get. 36 mm is a more than appropriate size. It worked back then and it works today.

Glad you had a nice few days.
The DJ is a great choice. I don't own one but I always check them out as there are so many choices out there.
Good luck and enjoy the choosing process. It's all part of the fun.

I was with a customer yesterday and he was wearing a TT version.

He's a little over 6'.

It looked fantastic

I recently traded away a silver stick on jubilee in changing things up in my collection a bit. No regrets, but I would like to add a white Romans in jubilee one day.

At 65, one thing you might want to keep in mind is readability as you make your marker/dial choice.

A white faced DJ on oyster has been calling me for a while also. Very classic & yet ok on a lazy Saturday just like Angelo mentioned.
