Introduction From A Newbie

Hi Guys,

I'm a recent member but have lurked here for a few weeks. Before saying anything, I figured I'd keep my mouth shut & learn a few things first. I'm sure this was advice from my Father many moons ago. Anyway, I thought I should introduce myself a little.

I've loved watches all my life, something about the workmanship & reliability. Never had much to speak about in terms of timepieces, but always had an eye for the Rolex Sub. Simple but effective design, prolific reputation & durability. They were always just a bit out of reach & I guess something always took the place when I had the coin. I'm sure many of you have been there.

Well now I find myself making excuses for other things with the singular thought of getting my first Rolex. I was inadvertently offered a vintage Pepsi GMT by a co-worker. He was the original owner & had taken care of it like it was a child. Recently serviced, he decided it was time to let it go & was in love all over again. While scrounging up the funds, he apologized saying after thinking about it, he had decided it wasn't time to sell just yet.

He was looking for around $4K which I thought was fine considering I knew him & his penchant for taking care of things & since all else was original. When he decided to pull the piece, I was in a dilemma, what to do? new GMT II? Vintage GMT? I really don't leave this time zone but it's a damn fine looking watch.

Should I go back to my first love, the Sub? I still dive from time to time & have always loved the design. Or what about this new beast, the Sea Dweller? All seemed worthy of my affection. I guess it's between the Sub & SD & as many of you can imagine, I'm like a kid putting something on a Christmas list for Santa. At this point, I don't know what I'll come home with but I know it'll be something I'll keep for a long time. Probably something that'll have friends too because this hobby seems to be addictive. I enjoy reading this site very much, many thanks for all your help & sage advice.

Welcome to TRF, Billy!

Sorry to hear about your being so close to getting the Pepsi GMT II.

Anyway, since you seem to love the SS Sub Date, I would go for it. As you state, it's a classic icon from Rolex that you will never get tired of.

The SD 16600 could also be an option if you like a Rolex not having the cyclops (personally, I prefer that).

Best of luck with your decision and please do post pics of your Rolex once you get it!

Welcome to TRF, Billy.

"...I figured I'd keep my mouth shut & learn a few things first. I'm sure this was advice from my Father many moons ago..." Indeed good advice from your Dad when checking out any new forum!

Best of luck in your final decision regarding a Rolex purchase. Just keep in mind - whatever your choice (except the ClownMaster II, of course) will be a good one!

Welcome to TRF, Billy. Your funds put you pretty close to a decent used Submariner, GMT and you have enough now for an Explorer II. Try them all on, and imagine wearing each for the next several decades. That will help you decide which one is best for you!

Billy:

Welcome to TRF. Get the Submariner and you won't be disappointed. You won't be disappointed with the GMT either though I would look at the newer GMT IIc either in SS or TT.

Enjoy your stay here.

Thanks all for your kind words. It really is an addiction, isn't it? I'm just starting to realize that & I don't even have one yet. So much to learn, but I'm working on it in all my free time.

Oh, I did learn my father's advice of many moons ago so I do try to keep my mouth shut until I learn something but from time to time I do have a relapse of my old ways

Welcome Willi,

I am new here myself. Since I just went through almost the same exact process of decision, I thought I'd add my two cents.

Like you, the Rolex model I always coveted most was the Sub. I also really liked the Seadweller and the classic GMTs. Sound familiar? After several years of looking, lusting, research, I finally started going to some ADs in earnest to try them on again. ( Not for the first time, but for the first time with the intention of buying. There is a difference in the feeling, somehow. Very exciting.)

Specifically, I wanted to try on the Sub, Sub Date, Seadweller, and the old style GMT Master II. I also tried the new GMT II-C, and although my first impressions of seeing it in pics online hadn't been too positive, I had to admit it looked good in person and on the wrist.

After trying them all on, I really didn't even have to think it over. The Sub Date, reference 16610 was IT. The ROLEXROLEX inside the rehaut is a lot more subtle in person, so I don't mind it at all, though I thought I would. Yes, I could have saved a lot on the used market, but just once in my life I wanted to march into an AD and march out with a new Rollie on my wrist. It felt good! (My old Seamaster was in my pocket. Fine watch, but I'm really smitten with the new Sub date.)

If you go with the one you have always wanted, I suspect you can't go far wrong. I hate to impulse buy with that kind of money on the line! Oh, and even though I am a working stiff- cop- who doesn't make a huge salary, I am already plotting my next move down the road when I can swing it and my wife won't kill me. Luckily I am frugal with my funds and can afford to splurge a little now and again.

Yep, a GMT would be really nice, too.

Clyde

Hey Clyde,

Very true sentiments, I appreciate your thoughts a lot. I will say that I don't think I'm going to be satisfied with just one. At the moment I'm partial to the SD after having it, a Sub date and GMTII on my wrist. Something about the overall heft as compared to the Sub made me like it more. My wife was more partial to the Sub date but I believe the thickness of the SD turned her against it. We've never agreed on everything so I'm not worried about that . I usually do go back to my original desires at some point.

It if you can believe it, my newfound watch lust actually stemmed from a desire to get a Tag Heuer Monaco.

Been there, done that.

Oh Dan,

That's a beauty, thanks for showing it. I wasn't even going to go that large, just a simple Re-Edition black face chrono. And then I wound up realizing if I was going to buy anything that it should be a Rollie. I guess I still may get one as something to wear to the office but looking at Sea Dwellers & Sub Dates really took the steam out of the Monaco.

Do you still have it or was it a flip casualty?

Welcome. You won't be disappointed with the Sub. Enjoy your time here. Please post some pictures once you have the watch you decide on.
