2 Rolex out, 1 AP in - Thoughts
Hi all
Thinking of down sizing my collection, currently consisting of SS Daytona, Ceramic Sub Date and YM blue dial. The trade would involve chopping in the sub and yacht for a new AP royal oak stainless chronograph. I'm just not getting the wear from 3 watches. Daytona would become the daily watch, reserving the AP for special occasions. Thoughts?

Sucker for a chrono... Jumbo has crossed my mind but doesn't have the aesthetic appeal for me.

Yes! Sounds good to me. SS Daytona is one of the ones I'll never sell. The AP can be more of an end of week / weekender.

If you want to keep the Daytona, I second going for a non-chrono RO.
I'm not a chrono guy myself so I'd keep the Sub and go with a 15400 (white dial). You'd have a few extra bucks in the bank account if you did that as well!

You want the Royal Oak, ok, something's got to go. If it were me, the YM. As nice as it is, it loses just by process of elimination. You never discard a Sub, and you're a sucker for chronos. What dial on the Daytona?

At the end of the day,if you are happy with the trade and to top the balance up with cash,go for it!
( I would phone around and see what the trade in is on the RO just for reference,to get an idea of what sort of hit you might take if you ever wanna change again) |

I don't like AP. I get that they are awesome watches, but I don't like the look.
I would not do this trade.

Quality over quantity imo
Not saying steel Rolexes arent quality but I would go for 2 $20k watches over 4 $10k watches especially if collection is not shared with wife or good friends etc and doesnt get wrist time |

I would do it for a jumbo. This is me personally as the newer 26320 ROC is a tad large for my wrist. Also love the history of the Jumbo. Either way I like a little diversity so in your case, if the ROC fits do it!

I personally love the Daytona and will never trade mine. Totally get "sucker for a chrono" statement as most of my watches have been chronos. I think if I was in your shoe I would be content with Daytona and AP RO. I have the ROO and while I don't wear it all the time, it puts a smile on my face every time that I do... good luck with your trade...

Just curious for you chrono lovers, what is it you love about them? Do you love the complication? Do you find yourself frequently using it from a practical standpoint, and if so for what purposes?
No disrespect. I do respect and admire the chrono function, but whenever I am about to pull the trigger, I find myself hesitating since I just don't find a practical use for it in my everyday life. Maybe it doesn't matter so long as you appreciate the engineering of such a mechanical complication. To the OP, seems like you really love your chronos so I would say go with what you love!

OP, as per my post above, I would keep a diver and a chrono, for the sake of variety, but to answer the main question, I see no issue in trading 2 for 1, as long as the trade makes sense money-wise. Let go of all rationale and logical advice: which configuration of watches would bring YOU the most joy?

There's no rationale for any of this watch-related stuff.
"If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad" Worst thing is to have watches that go unworn. AP makes great watches, and you'll be really happy with the details, finishing, etc. Looking forward to some pics of your new watch! |
