Thinking of landing a datejust 1601

What are the pros, cons of this watch, movement etc?

Will RSC still service a 1601 from 1966?

It's a horological classic, what else is there to say?

The RSC will service any watch that they have the parts in stock for. I would call ahead for anything from the 60's.

I wouldn't have it serviced by RSC but that's just me.

I'd send a vintage piece to one of the recommended repair centers here on TRF. ABC or Time Care

RSC Beverly Hills told me my 1601 would have to be sent to Dallas.

I have one from right about that time and I love it! It's a genuine classic. I think it's the only Datejust I will own. It's beautiful and understated. I did the 36mm size.

When I wear it, it's actually more (outwardly) noticed and complimented than my 16710 and my 16570, which I never expected.

You can't go wrong with the 1601. What are you looking to get, a silver dial one? I'm biased.

How much was it to service?

Here is the 1972 model 1601 I just received today. Love it, a classic!

You actually have a 1603 with Engine Turned Bezel, not a 1601. If the case says 1601 your bezel has most likely been been changed.

Hey that stinks! I'll investigate! Thanks for the info!

x2. I still prefer the 1603, though. Hopefully yours is a 1603, not a re-bezeled 1601. Not that it would be a huge deal.

How to differentiate between a 1601 and 1603 apart from the movement?

1601 has a fluted gold bezel, 1603 has a steel, engine-turned bezel. Movement is the same, 1570.

The bezel looks different? 1601 fluted gold as in white gold? Flatter and "sharper" tips?

1603 - Engine-turned bezel means the bezel's tip is more protrude and rounded?

Got it. Thanks Adam, as always!

It is clearer when we have both watches side by side. All the subtle differences......

I landed one... YIPEEE!

1966 ROLEX DATEJUST 1601 - Sigma grey dial. Seller said it has replacement Luminova hands and relumed luminous plots. Oh, HQ Milton was my seller. Here's the link;
http://www.hqmilton.com/watches/1966...ray-sigma-dial

Considering it's an old piece:
1. When should I get this serviced next?
2. How much for a WG fluted bezel from the RSC as a replacement?

Look, I don't think this piece will need it, but just would like any feedback from those that have made that decision to get a bezel from a RSC.

Thanks in advance.

Why would you get a replacement bezel? That one is MINT.

Well did Jacek say that it was recently serviced?

If so then in 5 years.

If not...well...you might want to have someone take a look at it and see how it is doing...

You can spot need...stiff manual winding....low amplitude for the model through the positions....little or no oil in the upper escape and balance jewels.

Haven't a clue but probably 1/3 what you paid for the watch.

WG bezel can be had rather cheap, 100 € or so on Ebay.

Mine 1601 says HI!

I believe he was specifically asking about an RSC NEW bezel.
