Day Date 36mm Discontinued?
Thanks for all the correspondence on interesting subjects related to Rolex watches! This is a fun forum.
I have read extensively about the new Day Date 40 and that the Day Date II (41mm) will be discontinued. I have not read any mention (on this forum or on the Internet using Google) as to whether Rolex will continue to offer the Day Date 36mm. Will Rolex discontinue the 36mm? If Rolex continues to offer the Day Date 36mm, will the 36mm be upgraded to use the 3255 movement? I was already interested in the Day Date (36mm), when Rolex announced the new Day Date 40. I really like the specs of the new 3255 movement. I acknowledge the modern look of the Day Date 40, but I really prefer a 36mm watch in solid gold. In my opinion, 40mm in solid gold is too chunky for a dress watch, even though I recognize that the Rolex Oyster line are really sports watches (depends on whom you ask). I visited a dealer last year. I was very impressed with the yellow gold Day Date 36mm. The gold was beautiful, and the size was not too flashy—the right mix between solid gold and a gentleman's watch. I am also considering a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227 in yellow gold. Jamie |

Welcome to TRF. Hope you enjoy your time here.
In partial response to your questions, it is highly unlikely Rolex will discontinue the 36 mm DD. There has been some speculation that Rolex may discontinue the 40mm DD, but right now that is just speculation. I have a 36 mm YG DD and I can tell you from experience that it goes with just about anything.

Two different ADs in Scotland have told me the DD II (41mm) will be discontinued but the overall idea of Rolex at the moment is to offer the non professional models in many sizes which is different from the approach they had before. This looks to be the case given the new size releases of the OP and some lady models. I can see them discontinuing the DJ and DD II and releasing a DJ 40mm at next years Baselword.

I think the 36 mm will shine on. The 41 mm is probably going down the drain though.

The DD36mm is decades old and will always be part of the Rolex line. There have been updates to the calibre and that will continue eventually to the 3255 or a variant.
The DD2 was a newer experiment that is being discontinued after a relatively short time. |

36 has a lot of history. But it's the past. I think only older generation favors this size and few of the younger one to the best of my knowledge IMO. I could be wrong.

It's probably true, but it's just a matter of time for these younger you're talking about to become part of the olders ... then they will ask/need DD 36

Thanks for the quick replies, assuring me that I will still be able to purchase a DD 36 mm. That is good news (for me)!
So, the golden question is will Rolex use their new Calibre 3255 in the DD 36 mm? If the answer is yes, then that will immediately solve my dilemma in deciding between the DD 36 mm (Calibre 3155) and the DD 40 (Calibre 3255). I have a strong affinity for state-of-the-art technology. It would be very hard for me to pass on this new Calibre 3255, because I strongly prefer the 36-mm size. I am willing to wait for a DD 36 mm with Calibre 3255, if that will happen. I won't wait too long. Otherwise, I'll go for the Calatrava 5277. Thanks Again, Jamie |

Never say never, after all the Air King is gone, but I highly doubt the 36mm will ever go, particularly with a strong following in Asia where many have smaller wrist sizes and like a classic semi dress watch. the 40mm will be the option for those who want a bigger watch.

I'm curious, why will people start to ask for or need a 36mm as they get older?

I would be extremely shocked if the DD was discontinued. Much like the DJ, the DD is classic Rolex at its best. 36mm worked nearly 60 years ago when the DD was introduced and it will work 60 years from now. There are just something's that do not go out of style.

1. Keep the 36 mm 2. Replace the DDII @ 41mm with DD40 @ 40mm 3. The 42 mm Skydweller, which is functionally a DD with more complications (but no President's bracelet) becomes the de facto large size So you have small (36) medium (40) and large (42) |

Quite possibly the Calibre 3255 will be first available in the DD 40 followed by the DD 36 the next year. I can wait one more year. If the DD 36 with 3255 is not available this time next year, then I will snap-up a Calatrava. Jamie |

Will Rolex discontinue the 36mm?
I do not think so.

Looking forward to a 36mm DD in WG to supplant the 36mm DJ I've worn for 37 years.
Never felt small on my wrist and the 118239 feels heavy enough. |

I'd have a hard time imagining that Rolex would dump the 36mm DD, especially when the 40mm and the 41mm are so close in size, but when one considers the elimination of the 34mm Air King and the 36mm OP and the Explorer, it makes one wonder what might be up their collective sleeve.

I would be very shocked if DD 36mm ever get discontinued. It is the Rolex flagship model after all. Sure people are wearing bigger watches now a days... but trends come and go... I have a 36mm DD and i think its about as perfect as it comes...

I recently visited my local AD here in Houston. They were telling me that the 41mm have been discontinued. They have replaced it with a 40mm and have changed the styling of the Roman numerals to make it more "modern" (wish I had taken some pictures to show you guys). I did not hear anything about Rolex discontinuing the 36mm.

Cool picture! And, that is what I was trying to say. The 36-mm size is just right for a solid precious metal such that it still looks elegant for a dress-sports watch.
