Lost my click spring... AAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!
I decided yesterday that I had worn my Coke insert long enough and it was time to switch back to the Pepsi. I really like the red/black, but there's no substitute for the Pepsi.
After I removed the bezel I attached the click-spring to a piece of tape to keep it from getting lost, as I always do. As I was holding the piece of tape, with click-spring attached, the spring came loose and fell in to a TRASH CAN. The trash bag was completely full and tied shut, but the spring fell right through the small opening at the top of the bag. I immediately said to myself, "That thing's gone forever." I spent a few minutes looking on the surface of the trash to locate the spring, but it was no where to be found. I reassembled the bezel assembly and reattached it to my watch... minus the click-spring, of course. Fast forward 6 hours... At 10:00 last night my wife and I were sitting watching the tele. I said to my wife... "I'll never find another click-spring - I've NEVER seen one for sale before." I quickly made my way back to the trash bag. I grabbed an extra bag and began transferring items, one at a time, from one bag to the other. After about 20 mins I had removed ALMOST ALL of the contents and there it was, sitting at the bottom of the bag.... MY CLICK-SPRING!!! I was sooooo excited when I found it! It was getting late and I was in no mood to pull the bezel apart again, so I placed the bezel-spring in to a small ziplock bag to be installed at a later date. In fact, I'm wondering if I'll ever reinstall it. I actually prefer it without the spring... it reminds me of the 16750 GMT that I used to own. I figure I can reinstall it anytime if I change my mind, or if I ever decide to sell the watch. Sorry for the looooong story.... as you can tell it was quite an event.

Jeff,
I've broken a spring once. Little buggers take a long time to get from Rolex too. But I agree, my Tudors [chrono and DD] have no spring and I kinda like it better. They work just fine and no worry about lining up the arrow. Glad you found the spring though. dP

Why is the thing you lose always at the bottom of the pile? Well found though. If you hadn't looked - you would never have got to sleep!

I am trying to imagine you swapping bezels over your trash bag? Maybe next time you should lay a towel down on a table and swap it over the towel.

Yes, it does sound strange, but I can explain. I always use the desk in my office when tinkering with my watch. My wife recently (last week) completely redesigned the entire office, leaving a bag of garbage next to my desk. To be honest, I didn't really even notice it there. When the click-spring broke loose from the tape, it ended up "jumping" into the bag.

What about the planet?
Jeff, I assume the spring is metal and therefore next time needs to go into the recycling bin along with most other parts of your watch. Leather straps can maybe be composted. It's the responsibility of all of us to do our bit with regard to environmental stewardship. You might check with your local town what the rules are for recycling.

Colmanitis, How much trouble to switch the bezel on the gmt? Is it as simple as popping the old one off and popping the new one on. I am in the process of trying to get 16710 with the pepsi bezel. I am thinking of getting a black also if it is not problem to switch them out. Thanks

Holy Cr_p, what are the odds of that! It could have landed anywhere, but of course Murphy's Law makes it land @ the btm of your trash bag.
Yikes....Oh well, you persevered & ended up victorious....Good for you....gha |

No, it's still on the way. This is the Pepsi insert that's original to the watch.

Been There....done That....
....MORE times than I care to say. My work bench, located in the garage, probably has more click springs, setting levers, and the like, than MOST jewelers have.
I once had a setting lever "TAKE OFF" across the garage, 3 years ago, and have still not found it. One year later, I located one from Ofrei and got the watch back to a working condition. I have used magnets, swept the floor, and still have hands, clicks, levers, screws, etc, SOMEWHERE in the garage. I have NEVER found any of the click springs....yes, multiple springs.:twit It's all in the fun of ownership I guess. Stan. |
