Rule #1 get what u like. Try as many models on your wrist as possible and see which one "fits" your wrist, style, and budget.
I think a Sub is always a great choice. I would also suggest a Daytona, but they are a bit more expensive. Both models are versatile in my view.
Take your time, the search is part of the experience.
Good Luck

Welcome to the forum. For your first purchase just take your time and do a bit of research into the watches you like. If you can you should go and try them on, what looks good in the window may not look so good on the wrist. Take a quick snap of what they look like on your wrist so you can view it at your leisure without someone trying to push you one way or the other.

Good luck with your choice.

True. I got my Sub 16610LV first in March, intending it to be my one Rolex. At the weekend I also picked up an Explorer II 42mm white dial. Go figure. Now go shopping!

No choice is wrong between those two. You need to see both on your wrist to finally know. You'll probably get them both eventually.

Welcome. Subs a classic, the date versions a bit more prevalent. The GMT looks the same to most people, obviously it's another and usability all together. The EXP II especially in white is a bit of a standout, looks younger, but bigger, also gives you a second time zone. I suggest to try them all on, and while your at it, give the SDc a closer look as well. Even a bit more tool watch then the others. Mostly I would make a decision based on needs, date, second time zone, even Chiono (Daytona), them for wearability in your personal life, wearing a lot of dress shirts might make the SDc not a prime choice, a smaller wrist might not support the 42mm of an EXP II. Overall they're all great watches and would make a nice collection, have fun, the journey of finding your Rolex is just great. Congrats for the decision and post pictures once you aquired you favorite one...

You're asking about two very popular models. I tried on most of the new models and liked the 114060 Submariner the best. The WISEST thing you could do would be to visit an AD and try them out yourself. You'll know which one is the best.

A few back I would have immediately come with the model answer saying that the you can't go wrong with the sub. However after recently purchasing the Daytona, I felt that I probably left out a whole lot of cool models that to me were more to my taste.

I would just advise you to go and try them on and pick whichever one sings to you more. Do not be swayed by what people in the forum say. Get what you like.

The Daytona hasn't left my wrist ever since and my hulk has been left in the drawer. Been over 2 months and honeymoon phase for the Daytona just isn't over

The Exp II has a better feel on my wrist for me it is my most comfortable watch that I own and the Polar dial is stunning . I purchased the Sub first as that was the Rolex that always spoke to me but as soon as I purchased the Exp II it has been my go to watch.

I had the same experience. On first consideration The sub seems like the quintessential sports watch, but the Exp II 42 mm is a cleaner, more sophisticated and versitile design.

Sub is classic, in black. The green may be a little less versatile. The Exp II is great, a bit big but most wrists can pull it off. I would go Exp II....

ExpII 42MM is the more modern size/looks wise.

they are both my favorite, can't go wrong.

Or

The first one I got was the sub. My first polar paved the way for my Daytona. I just re-aquired one and really love it.

Just bought a Suc C date. Always wanted one and I like it, but my 42mm black dial Explorer II just feels more solid and versatile (if you don't meed the timer bezel). It is just a bit heavier which I like. I would pick old sub over old Explorer II for sure, but the new Exp II with 42 mm case, orange GMT hand and a date cyclopes is a home run.
