Subs & DSSD
Once in a while I start thinking about a piece and then boom I get one. I want to think about this a little more than usual. I recently sold many of my watches and now have fewer but yet a wide range. I had 3 subs, TT, WG, Green, I now only have the TT. The DSSD for some reason has my attention right now.
Thoughts comments on this piece? I don't have issues with larger cases, AP 44 FC for example. Is it just me or is the DSSD just not that popular/desirable? |

I've been day dreaming of the DSSD for quite some time. I don't think it's very popular but I do think it's very desireable. I would love to have one, it just doesn't fit well on me and never has unfortunately.

Less popular = a good thing.

Had one for awhile. Beautiful to look at, hard to wear on the wrist.

From what I see here in terms of popularity
Sub>SD4K>DSSD What comes to mind is that most people don't mind the 44mm, they mind the thickness of the case...imo |

The DSSD is less popular because many don't like the size and weight.
But many here think over 40 mm is too big, and criticize the Datejust 2, Day-Date 2, Yachtmaster 2, etc for that reason. I have a 44 mm AP forged carbon that is lighter than the DSSD, but is larger. If you are comfortable with a steel, gold, or platinum AP 44, you will wonder why anyone thinks the DSSD is too large or heavy. |

I'm not an owner, but the issue I see is that the watch is top heavy for how I like to wear my braclet. I prefer to have a small space ( enough for a pinky) between the braclet clasp and my wrist. When worn this way, it wants to rotate on my wrist.

Why do care if it's popular?

I've had my Deep Sea for about seven years. Properly adjusted, it isn't top heavy to me and actually is quite comfortable. Once you are used to it (and that may take a few weeks) it really won't seem out of proportion. I also own the SD 4000 and feel that they are different enough to own both. Here are wrist shots of both and a picture of the two together. The Deep Sea is not for everyone but I'm not likely to sell mine anytime soon.

Here is a size comparison against my EXP II, the DSSD has been my daily wearer for the past 5 years, no complaints on size
and a size comparison against my Sea Dweller 4,000

The DSSD is a bit heavy and thick. The pusher may also rub into your hand. A friendly collector let me test run his and I was not too effected by the weight or the pusher. Stature does play a part. I know that businesses allow returns. Sant blanc allowed me to return a watch that wasn't exactly for me. If the watch isn't for you then just return it :)

I prefer my D blue over subs and SDs. I have a 7" wrist and it feels and looks great. Go for it!

I would guess the OP is asking about its popularity because this is a discussion forum, and above all things, mostly people here like to get the opinions of everyone about everything! Including why a watch is or is not popular.
For me personally, if I'm in love with a watch, car, girl, etc. I don't care how popular said item is, but you'd be fooling yourself if you say you don't live in a world where the general popularity of a product doesn't affect the way you perceive it. |

I got one despite it being slightly too large for my 6.5" wrist. IMO it really depends on how wide the side of your wrist the watch head will sit on is rather than the total circumference of your wrist.
You'll know whether you can pull it off once you try it on. Life's too short to let your choices be affected by what people think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Before I purchased my DSSD I thought twice about it. Im sure glad I went with it though. It looks and feels great and after two weeks it feels like a sub.

I think it's an awesome looking watch...but how it wears, I don't know, it's a little too thick for me.

Once you wear it for a while and it is properly fitted it is a magical piece. I had the extension removed to center the clasp and it just fit better for me. The height/weight does not bother me at all. The micro adjustment of the clasp while still wearing the watch is great for adjustments thruout the day as your wrist changes size.
Not sure what msrp is on a sub these days but the price difference between the two may have an effect on the sales numbers as well?? A member once made a comment that everyone that owns a DSSD eventually flips it and he was probably closer to right than wrong. I can see flipping mine for a SD4k and a Blue Pelagos. But will enjoy it every day I have it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My daily wearer is a DSSD. To me, all other dive watches pale in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I own others...114060, 116610LN, 116610LV, 116600, 16600 and so on. I love them all, but the Deep Sea is the one I always end up thinking about, even when Im wearing something else. It was my first Rolex and I love the feel of the heft and size. I have 8" wrists and it feels so right on my wrist.
However, we shall see once I get my grubby little paws on a Smurf... ;) So, I guess my point is that I would never part with my DSSD and highly recomend it. I bought it because It felt like I thought a Rolex should, not because I wanted something to be noticed by others...its for me and no one else. Buy it...you wont be sorry. |
