Replacement Dials?

I was looking at a Sea Dweller which was from '88 but has a Luminova replacement dial and hands; does this hurt or help its value in your opinion?

Wouldn't bother me at all but I'd say that it would hurt the value a bit.

Hurts a bit, but for an 88? Not much.

I would wonder why they were changed. It may have been done just for fresh lume, or it may have had a leak.

I prefer original, as do many others so I'd suggest with fewer potential buyers, value must be effected negatively.

Many times Rolex will upgrade dials during servicing; service dials from my understanding.

This is my 1680. I know it is worth less than an untouched model but who cares. It's exactly what I wanted, a vintage watch with a modern look.

If I wanted an untouched Sub, I would've payed two grand extra.

It only hurts if you are planning on not keeping it forever. If it sings to you, get it (provided it is priced right). In the end, it will be your watch and your story with it.

If the question is cash value, and not personal value, I think it hurts. In most collectables, originality is everything.

Condition of the dial affects value more than anything else, so a completely different model of dial would be a significant departure from the original. Kind of like dropping a modern L series corvette engine into a 60's car - it would still be a great muscle car, but wouldn't have the same value as a car with the original drive train and matching numbers.

Think of it as an upgrade to the tritium dial and hands whose lume would be depleted at this point.

I agree. Comments along the line of "if you like it, who cares" are still valid and quite true, but when it comes down to it, value is affected and that was the question.

Originality is everything, and more so with increasing age. A service dial might not bother you now, but in 10 years it probably will.

To answer the original question, it definitely hurts the value. Hence my comment regarding buying it priced right.
