Van Halen Fans

Had the opportunity to see Van Halen last Tuesday night here in upstate NY. Been a long time since I've seen them and I believe last time I went, Sammy Hagar was doing vocals.

In short, GREAT concert! Eddie is as good or better (if that's even possible ) than before! Absolutely blistering speed and precision on the guitar! He OWNS that thing and can make it do whatever the hell he damn well wants it to! Probably have it wash dishes if he so chose.

David Lee Roth still sounds great, IMO. Yeah, he can't hit the high notes like he used to but at 60 yrs. old he still ROCKS! And talk about good shape! He's put a lot of 25 yr olds to shame! Puts on a great show!

Alex still bangs the skins like nobodies business and had an awesome solo!

Wolfgang is super tight on the bass and strong with backing vocals! I think it's really cool that son, dad, and uncle all perform together!

If you get the chance and still are into hard rock, don't miss this show! For 2+ hours I was 16 again and it was GREAT!

A few months ago a guy called me that he was selling Eddie's Ferrari 348 . . .

Did you know that he is Dutch ?

As a fan I suppose you do

I partly agree Ken the band is tight and very entertaining, I saw them in Boston last month, have to totally disagree about David Lee Roth however, he's a disgrace! Walking around talking when he should be singing, forgetting words and acting like a fool. I don't want any stories, I want singing and if he's not up to it he needs to walk away. The band needs a front man and David Lee Roth is a joke of a front man.

Eddie, Wolfy and Alex are awesome, and totally worth seeing but David brings them all down. Sorry my friend JMHO. He's the sole reason I didn't post a similar thread in July.

A few friends went to that show Tuesday night also. They didn't say much about David. Like you, they said Eddie was fantastic and all in all it was a great show. Glad you had fun

Saw Van Halen back in the mid 80's and they were terrible. Roth walked around talking, swinging a sword, and doing his martial arts in the middle of songs. Very distracting. I loved their albums but their concert .

Couldn't agree more. DLR just doesn't have it anymore.
To the OP, glad you enjoyed the show

Marc, John and Brian. No worries about the disagreement with DLR. Maybe I caught him on a good night, maybe my perception of the show was different.

We had really good seats, about 20 rows from stage right in front of Eddie. They had just cancelled their previous show due to DLR having the flu so maybe he was trying to show the band and everyone else he was okay.

If I'm going to be perfectly honest , being a guitar player, I was totally mesmerized by Eddie and 80% of my time was spent watching him do things with a guitar that no human should be able to do. My mouth was literally agape watching him. I remember him being fantastic years ago but I swear that last Tuesday he was even better.

BTW: I did miss seeing Michael Anthony on bass even though Wolfgang did an amazing job. Can you imagine having Eddie Van Halen for a father and teaching you to play the guitar??????

Totally agree Marc!! Diamond Dave has lost his luster! He walks around way too much and smiles like he's on Meth or something. Definitely not the showman he once was. I say bring back Sammy Hagar! And as far as Wolfgang goes! He's no Michael Anthony, and it is a disgrace how they treated Anthony an original member! Just my 2 cents

^This. MA is such a great guy it's a shame he's been treated like this. EVH had his pics and any mention removed from future printings of old recordings. Seems a bit heavy handed.

I am definitely a Van Hagar fan. He has a much better voice and stage presence than the arrogant DLR. Live: Right Here Right Now is one of my favorite albums.

Another Van Hagar fan here. Saw them several times. I would not pay money to see DLR. He always was and always will be an embarrassment to himself, the band and the rest of humanity. Sammy on the hand is a great singer, musician and businessman who I respect a lot. His auto-biography is a great read and gives a lot of insight.

There are some craptastic recent videos of DLR and VH on youtube that are absolutely unwatchable unless you need some cringe-worthy "entertainment".

That said I'm glad the OP enjoyed the show!

Glad you had a great experience. Sorry, I didn't mean to take away from it.
Mine was almost 30 years ago.
I loved Van Halen before it became Van Hagar. The songs were cool, pumped you up and very entertaining.
And they were a rock group chicks dug, which was a big plus in my book.

Tony and Ken, so glad you brought up Michael Anthony, what has happened is a crying shame, he was the perfect VH bassist and an all around good guy. I think along with the genius of the brothers comes a protectionists attitude but I do find it ironic that DLR is free to bring them all down but MA is left out in the cold when all of them would be better off with MA plying, Wolfy is good but can't reach the depth of experience and character they all reached together.

My wife saw them a few weeks ago and her experience was the same.
David Lee Roth is the weakest part of the show.

Still listen to their first four albums regularly. Saw them 3 times in the early/mid 80's in Seattle. 2 were great shows and one not so much. DLR was so drunk during the "1984" tour that he could not remember the lyrics. Whole band seemed pretty toasted for that show. If I remember they did three shows that year in Seattle and reviews of the other two were much better. Level of intoxication probably biggest factor...
I will say I saw DLR a few years later for his "eat them an smile" tour and he was really on that night. That was an excellent show.

I recently saw a forum, where Eddie Van Halen was at a music school in front of an audience and the teacher and students could ask him questions. Eddie had stated that back in the beginning DLR was more into Disco than rock and it was hard for them to get him to collaborate on albums.
Fast forward to now, Eddie stated that they want to do a new album, but DLR is more into dance music and doesn't want to spend that kind of time in the studio
DLR into Disco/Dance, who would have thought!
