Another this or that thread...

Hi all,

I have for now 2 watches with which I am very happy but either this year or next I should have some funds coming in and I very possibly might add a third piece to my duo making it a trio.

From learning and experience I know that it's better to really think it through and not buy impulsively, so I want to make the best choice when I get my watch, I will probably, almost surely, buy new but probably from my grey dealer friend in France, as he has good prices, maybe not the best but on the contrary of most grey dealers in Europe he can also make tax refund, since I am back in Ukraine I am in titled to it.

The contenders are 3 watches I find great, even if I didn't see all of them in real.

The 3 I am thinking about are, Lange Datograph perpetual in WG, I prefer the WG to PT because of the grey dial, the movement of course is incredible and it's basically the Lange version of the Patek 5970 but available much much cheaper than the Patek, if bought new it's around 90K on which you take off 16%, then we have the RM 011, don't know which material to choose but it will probably be TI for the weight factor, thought about carbon or ceramic (not sure it exists in CE) but having already my diver in Ce I think having 2 black watches is not the best thing and TI is probably the best thing, and to tell you the truth never saw it in real, so I have no idea if it will look good on me, on pics it looks great and it is the ultimate sports watch IMO, and last we have the AP RG skeleton, saw the SS version and it didn't strike me but the RG I really like, I have to say that the AP and Lange will probably be either on rubber straps or on leather but not croc as I'm not a huge fan of croc straps.

For the moment I think the 2 in first place are the RM and ALS one for being the ultimate sport watch and comfort, the other for being the ultimate in complications, has an awesome movement, PM and also that for me the holy trinity in watches is PP, AP and ALS not VC, but the AP is still in the game as I have a SS, a ceramic and a RG would make a perfect trio, plus the AP is much more "reasonably" priced if you can say so compared to the 2 others, but to be honest for the moment the AP is behind the others, I wanted a RG 44 but even if with 6.9 I could probably pull if off I think I will be more comfortable with a smaller watch, when I tried the CE 44 they felt too big for me...

What would be your personal choice and considering my 2 other pieces what would be your choice in my case.

Thanks a lot for your comments and advice.

Here's a few pics of the watches to help you choose, thanks again

Appreciate the technology in the RM but it is not for me, the AP is nice but not really into skeleton, and in the spirit of the three bears the LANGE is just right..........

Lange – you already have an AP, and as for RM, well....anyway, the other two are for those with a full collection, so looking for something quite different from what they already own.
Within a 3 piece collection, the Lange makes the most sense, for me.

Regards the resale value – if you have to worry about that (seriously), then you're barking up the wrong tree.
You already know from a previous thread of yours, what the pre-owned value of a Lange is, the RM and RG AP will be little different.
So in that respect, you're daft if you stick with the mental attitude of only buying new, even with a discount from your favourite grey dealer.

No as I said I don't worry about the resale too much, I know I will loose a little if I need to sell but the fact I'm getting with discount plus tax refund of 16.9% should stop me from loosing too much, of course I know that if you buy Lange or RM you take a huge hit on resale if you didn't buy them at a great price, so the discount plus the 16.9% means that I am getting them at a great price, but you are right I will erase that part from the thread since I already know the resale prices and all that, don't need to mention this part in the thread

Of the 3 definitely the Lange, though I personally prefer the Datograph. Warming up to dressier watches now? The RM is cool but would compete with your AP Diver. I'd really recommend considering the AP 44 RG again, as I'm pretty sure you would get use to the size.

The Lange seems to round our your collection best. For me it depends upon usage and what complements your current pieces. This will be the most expensive piece you will own so far so do you really want to tie up that kind of $ in something you won't wear? Be honest with yourself on this one. Are you looking for an alternative to the Diver (RG 44 is a good option) or something totally different (Lange). I don't have a big need for a full on dress watch but that one of the things I love about the Datograph--dressy but slightly more sporty at the same time, which fits my needs/usage best (not to mention a badass movement).

What's to compare?
You don't walk into bar and compare drinks, you decide what you're more in the mood for.
Same story here, only the choice is 3 equally appealing watch designs.

Of course I don't want to tie up money into something I won't wear, definitely not, not looking for an alternative, looking for a 3rd watch to complement the 2 I have but not to replace one, I agree with you on dress watches, not really my thing but the datograph is not a real dress piece for me, it's between sport and dress, very much like my 5712, you are right I do need to try the 44RG as I do find it amazing, but when I look at my diver on my wrist I really have the feeling that it's as big as I can go, but yes I do have the intention of trying it as if I could pull off the 44 size it would be a great choice. Thanks for your comments, very helpful

It's not a comparison at all Paul, it's just what you think is the better choice as a 3rd watch for me considering the 2 that I already have and my tastes

Yes exactly, 3 great watches and can't seem to get which one I need/want to get, but I think the RM and Lange are in first place, the AP is great also but not sure it fits my style, I find it great but will I really wear it often, had the RG daytona on strap, 116515, hardly ever wore it even if it is a great watch, so don't want to make the same mistake with the AP, I made some mistakes in the past as I was thinking which should I get instead of which I prefer, let's say in Rg the watch I clearly prefer is the AP RG 44mm, clearly my favorite but I'm really afraid that the size will make it have very little wrist time or that I will flip it shortly after, if they made it in 42mm I wouldn't even be posting this thread, it would 100% be the next on the list, again I do need to try it IRL but having tried the CE 44mm which is exactly the same I did find it very big for me, but if I can handle the size factor it would solve the problem very quickly, much more affordable than the RM or Lange, RG, and awesome...

I agree that the watch in simple or perpetual is amazing, probably one of the best and most beautiful movement available, and the complications are great, moon phase, chrono, PC, exactly the german version of the Patek 5970, to be honest I even prefer it to the Patek but in WG

Well doesn't matter what we think, just what you do (as we have no clue as to your tastes).

But since you are day dreaming, I say RM011 any flavor (and sell Diver).

If the 44mm is too big for you, the RM will be too. And if you think you have to stick to titanium RMs to avoid weight, you need more experience with the brand.

RG skeleton is very cool but would add the RG Bracelet. I thought you weren't a fan of watches on leather bands so I am confused why you would consider the AP and Lange. I hate that Lange personally. Just too darn busy and a bunch of stuff scattered on that dial. The movement looks great but so what. The dial is something you have to stare at all day. RM-011 is pretty awesome and an amazing sport watch so I would pick that out of the 3 but it doesn't matter what I think LOL!

Arnaud you seem to be big fan of sport watches. I think RM011 it should be. Titanium or RG or NTPT Carbon. But that gets you arguably the upper echelon of sports watches with a "skeleton" dial.

Personally, the Lange by a mile

Don't like skeleton watches and the RM is just too confusing.

I am absolutely not a fan of croc, but a black simple leather band can be very nice, which if I choose to take one of these makes 1 bracelet, 1 rubber and 1 leather, not bad variety, but you are right that what I prefer is bracelet or rubber

Well like I said Mike I like sport and dress sporty, I definitely need to go see the RM boutique when I will be in Paris, to see really if they are for me or not, and also to go try the AP 44RG, if it was the right size on me then that would be the best choice IMO, I mean it's RG, on rubber and with the ceramic bezel to minimize scratches, not too expensive for such a piece IMO, it would really be the best choice, so definitely need to go see RM and AP, first RM then AP

Again thanks for your comments all
