Unbelievable..... At a small gathering last night, enjoying the holiday evening, I was introduced to a co-workers friend. A very nice gentleman, and as soon as we shook hands I notice his watch (What WIS doesn't?). It LOOKS like a Rolex... kind of.... I didn't want to be impolite so waited for a moment during the evening when we were alone and I could ask discreetly about his time piece. A big smile came over his face and he gladly showed me. The reason I had trouble recognizing it was because it was a mid-80s (or so) Oysterquartz, I don't think I have ever seen one like it. A very nice looking piece, all gold day-date with kind of a wood-looking dial. He hapily explained he had owned it for years, and really enjoyed it. I congratulated him on having such a nice watch and we talked Rolex for a few minutes, it was a very pleasant conversation. Then he excused himself and went to get a drink.

UP WALKS CAPTAIN IDIOT.... Someone I didn't know, late 30s I guess, tacky clothes, loud, obnoxious... you get the picture.

Captian Idiot: "I overheard you talking with that guy about his watch, I know a lot about Rolex, that was DEFINITELY a fake?"

Me: "Oh? And how can you tell?"

CI: "Easy, did you see how the second hand went tick-tick-tick? That means it's a quartz movement, Rolex NEVER made a watch like that"

Me: "I see, so... you're an expert on Rolex huh?"

CI: "Oh sure, I've owned Rolexes for years ( he wasn't wearing one) buy and sell them all the time, that wasn't even close to a real one"

Me: "So... Rolex NEVER made a quartz movement? Ever?"

Captain Idiot: "Oh no, definitely not, you can take my word for it, that one is a F-A-K-E Fake!"

He definitely didn't recognize my EXP as a Rolex and I was thinking about showing it to him and explaining what an OysterQuartz was.... but decided not to waste the Oxygen. I was having too nice an evening to start a confrontation but I wanted to say.... You can imagine. Later on, I told the Oysterquartz owner and we had a nice laugh. He actually said it's not the first time someone had accused him of wearing a fake Rolex. I guess for the laymen it could appear as not real, but don't go claiming you're an expert and then proving yourself a moron.

Some of those Quartz watches are stunning. The thin, square bracelet is beautiful too.
Someone on here (Expat Beast I think) posted a pic of one. It was truly lovely.

Completely agree. I had not given much thought to the line, but the one he was wearing was absolutely gorgeous

That's a beauty Adam! The one the gentleman was wearing (I should have gotten the model number

) was all YG Day date, and it had this dark-wood dial, don't know if it was real wood but sure looked like it! Really caught my attention and I now realize what a stunning line up the Oysterquartz were

Adam, the 19018 is stunning. The first Rolex I almost bought was an OQDD, but not that one.

If you love RO, Nautilus, Rolex OQ will compliment them well. I find I enjoy the OQ more than my RO and Nautilus nowadays

A respected former co-worker once told me "when someone is self destructing, they don't need your help." Prior to that point I would have jumped in and likely ruined my evening. The OP did the right thing!
