The Snail Pie Lounge, Millsville, Pa.

Hey everyone! Tonight I had the privilege of attending one of the best concerts of my life at a little barn with 60 or so other people to listen to Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. They had Dan with a bass man, a violinist, two women vocalists, lead guitarist, and more people yet...extraordinary in two ways: 1) the range of the music, from rock-n-roll, to blues, to jazz, to Klesmer, and 2) the intimacy of a small barn in the middle of nowhere(Millsville, Pa.) with a lot of nice people just kicking back, bringing their own beer to the concert, and gettin to pee in the bushes! Country living at its best in the middle of nowhere...at the Snail Pie Lounge

I'd like to know if anyone on TRF has had a similar experience with a top flight name band coming to play in a tiny setting, where you can talk one on one to 'star' musicians?

I think I've never, ever been so laid back at a concert in my life. I'm used to all the pushing and shoving at big venues(with the exception of Canada...Canadians are SO polite, it's amazing(saw Sir Elton John in Toronto last year at the Air Force stadium there....people were clean and neat and actually stood up when you needed to go get a drink or visit the restroom. No one threw beer or mixed drinks, and I was amazed. Would NOT happen in a major venue in the U.S.

best,
dan
p.s. will post more tomorrow on Good Morning TRF!! when I wake up, which I hope won't be for 10 hours, am EXHAUSTED!

That's what music should be all about - sounds like a great time!

A mini Woodstock without the rain, mud, drugs and naked people. Sounds like a great way to enjoy some good music.. Thanks for sharing.

I was going to comment, but it's just too easy...

Dan, are you and I the only ones on here who know what Klezmer is? I actually enjoy listening to it occasionally.

Klezmer jazz can be very good.

I had many friends back in Australia that were members of various Jewish youth groups and some of the music festivals were very good, and lots of fun... even for a visiting gentile...

Dan Hicks, geez that takes me back. Did he have the Lickettes with him?

Klezmer's big here in Toronto, one of the best are the The Flying Bulgars Klezmer Band. Kind of like Jewish fusion......

Dan Hicks didn't do any Klezmer the other night, but his stuff was outrageous, and the small venue added to the craziness of what he does on stage. His two female singers who do all the great harmonies...not sure if they have a name for their Act or not, but they're top flight..40's harmonies mixed in with 50's rock(at times)...what a great, eclectic presentation!
best,
dan
