Looks good. So did you find out why it says swiss, not T swiss T on the dial? What's the reference number?

Hi the ref is 7966/0 and it dates to around 1966. "SWISS is common on tritium pieces when we are talking Tudor. Opposite of Rolex in that regard"

I'm pretty sure the first Oysterdate Ranger was a 7996, like this one. The 7966, which can be seen in 1966 catalogues was a regular Oysterdate.

They were all available in normal oysterdate form. The ranger didn't have its own reference number until the ranger 11

There was a collector on here I think his name was Stan? He believed the only reference was 9050. So little is actually a known fact. You have to look at the dial printing/layout.

I know references were shared with non-Rangers in the 1960s and 70s. The Ranger got its own reference in about 1980, with the 90220 and 90330.

Awesome & again, congrats! -- Long Journey for you on this one
Having seen some higher res photos of the dial - if it is fake it is the best I have seen. It is perfect on some tiny details that would be missed unless you have lived with one for a while. Details that do not show on the faked ones. If I were chasing one I would not hesitate to get the one CH chased down. So to be clear, short of having it in my hand (in which case I would not give it back ;) ) , I am confident this is legit. As for the Ref # - from Tudor Collector: Quote:

I went through a period about a year ago trying to find a Tudor to add to my collection (sadly, I never found a good Ranger for the price, and I wound up buying a 7928 from Jacek at HQ Milton). But, like, the Old Expat Beast quote above, the "Swiss" only mark I have never seen from that era. Do you have a catalogue or some other reference that shows just "Swiss" and not "T Swiss T"? Not an accusation, or anything, just curious as I've never seen that on a Ranger. |

Here's another Swiss-only
Hi guys,
I realize this is a slumbering nine-month old thread, but I thought some of you may be interested to hear that I have a Tudor Prince Oysterdate Ranger exactly like Chef-Hacker's... Like CH's, my Ranger too has the Swiss-only dial (ie it's signed "Swiss" instead of the standard "T Swiss T"), and it too is a 7966/0 from circa 1966 (serial number 589XXX). I have yet to find out why Tudor used this variant of the dial, but the fact that there are at least two such scarce dials out there ("scarce" because I have yet to find another) indicates that it's legit. This viewpoint, BTW, has been corroborated by Tudor expert Morgan Fehrenkamp of TudorCollector.com fame. BTW, a point of interest for you eagle-eyed Tudor Ranger fans out there... My dial has what seems to be a tiny lume dot, located just beneath the "i" of "Swiss" (see attached image). I don't know the purpose of this dot and neither does Morgan. Perhaps this is Tudor's version of the Rolex Sub exclamation point dial? Cheers, David |

Hi David - you won this watch today, right? You beat my bid by $50 ;)
I was remoting into my office computer to make the bid and the connection stuttered. I had the previous winning bid on it ;) The "DOT" may just the tiny hash minute mark - or not - hard to tell from the photo??

Yup, that was me...
Hi linesiders,
Yes, I won the watch today. Sorry I took it from you... The auction house is here in Tel Aviv, Israel, my hometown, so I had a chance to examine the watch before the auction. It was a good buy so I'm happy. Now I need to find a period-correct bracelet... Regarding the lume dot, I don't yet have the watch in hand but if I recall correctly the dot is 'heavier' than the minute hash marks on the dial. Also, the latter are flat white paint whereas the dot has some lume on it which gives it some 3D height above the dial face. But again, this is from memory (and also from looking at the close-up photo I posted above). When I have the watch in hand I'll look again with a loupe and let you know what I see. BTW, what's the Ranger photo you posted? It's got a "T Swiss T" dial so it's not Chef-Hacker's or mine... David |

Nice pickup. I use mine on a Rolex 18mm straight rivet. I love my Ranger but wish it was a little bigger. I have attached a photo of the bottom of my dial and the line below the Swiss is larger than the rest. Linesiders and Morgan both helped me with mine.

Thanks for the feedback, MH. I'm very happy with my purchase.
I don't yet have the watch in hand but once I do I'll have another look at the tiny dot beneath the "i" of "Swiss" and compare it to the minute hash marks to see if perhaps the dot is simply a shortened hash mark. I'll update ASAP. I too was helped by Morgan, who kindly shared his time and expertise with me. Thanks, Morgan! David |
