New To Rolex + 14060M Content (Bye Planet Ocean)(Photo-Heavy)
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444445534.256445.jpg
As I'm sure many can relate, I'm very picky when it comes to watches. If I'm spending a reasonable sum of money on a "luxury product" I want it to be exactly what I'm looking for. Problem is, that's a moving target. And it's been an even tougher mark to hit in a rugged but elegant dive watch for everyday wear. Especially since I was pretty stubborn toward Rolex due to the stigma. Ultimately I realized it was the Submariner that I really wanted--in particular the 14060M due to the no-date dial and lack of a cyclops, classic case proportions, lightweight bracelet, non-maxi dial and hands, and all the other little details that make this such a great timepiece (the slightly raised crystal and aluminum bezel compared to the flush crystal and shiny ceramic bezel on the SubC, the drilled lug holes, the vintage vibe of the stamped endlinks and tuna can clasp, etc). ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444445965.189852.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444445981.952518.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444445999.062511.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444446030.249699.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444446039.265809.jpg Up until now my hesalite sandwich 3572.50 Omega Speedmaster Professional is the only watch that I've purchased and known I'd never sell. This addition of the 14060M may be the second watch to qualify. This particular V-serial Sub became mine through a partial trade of my 42mm 2201.50 Omega Planet Ocean + cash with a trusted independent seller from the forums. From what I can gather it's a 2009 model which is a sentimental year for me since it's the year I proposed to my now-wife which is a cool sentimental tie-in (and this year was our 5th wedding anniversary, and I've been on the hunt for a nice watch to commemorate the occasion, which is why I ended up with this Sub anyway making for another good sentimental tie-in). It didn't come with box or papers unfortunately but me and the seller believe it to be all original and never serviced, although the case has been lightly polished once by a former RSC case repolishing professional through the seller. I do miss certain aspects of my Planet Ocean but overall it was just a little too much for me (too big, too heavy, too aggressively styled). It wasn't a fit for my style or personality. My favorite thing about the Sub and Rolex sports watches in general is the level of restraint showcased by Rolex in the size and styling of their watches. Some may call it boring but to me it's exactly what makes them classic. To be fair, I am a minimalist so it makes sense that Rolex's reserved approach would appeal to me so much and be a better fit. I'm glad I got out of my own way and got over the stigma of what people might think of me if they notice I'm wearing a Rolex. Because truth be told, almost no one pays attention to what watch anyone is wearing, and the ones that do are usually fellow WIS enthusiasts that would appreciate it. This particular watch has an uncertain service history so I'll be having it serviced soon just as a precaution if I can manage to pry it off my wrist long enough. It's keeping time at right around +12 seconds over the past three days though, so not bad at +4/day. So hi, RolexForums. That's my tale of how I ended up with a 14060M, why I chose it and how ownership has been over the last week. It's joining my Speedy Pro as well as a vintage 1964 Longines 30L sub-seconds watch that I love (and is special to me as I got it from a gentleman in Italy named Alex, which is also my wife's name and she is coincidentally of Italian heritage), a few Seikos (birth year and month 6309 turtle case diver, SKX007 and SARB035) as well as some kickaround Casio quartz watches (a few all black mil-spec G-Shocks, a calculator watch and the "Casio Royale"). I'll leave with one parting photo of the Sub as well as a photo or two of my beloved Speedy Pro, my recently departed Planet Ocean and the other pieces in my humble collection (if you can call it that). Congrats on your first Rolex!
Welcome to TRF, and welcome to the 14060 family. Actually, we have a lot in common watch-wise: I also have a Speedy Pro, a 14060 and am an ex-PO owner. |

Awesome DCheeta. I'm a big Omega fan personally--as much as I am of Rolex for sure. I love the historical relevance of the Speedy, I do like the PO despite moving on from mine, I love the older Seamasters (divers and dress watches alike) and I do hope to add a 38.5mm Skyfall Aqua Terra to my Speedy and Sub for my personally perfect three-watch set. May get sidetracked with the Grand Seiko Snowflake however. |

Out of my 4, it's the one that I get the most complements on. My fave is my Exp. 2, but this one is a close 2nd. Until I get my Daytona.

Thanks man. I'm a photographer although I shoot people for money, not products. I do play around with my watches, cameras, old school razors and other various things as far as product photography goes just for personal fun. Still working on watches. They're tricky. |

It reminds me of clothing, where you would see 'Tommy' all over Tommy Hilfiger clothing My 14060M is non engraved, 2-line, perfect! I haven't seen many like it. |

Congratulations on the 14060M!!! My 14060 two liner is one of the most rugged and comfortable watches I've got; definitely my choice for water activities. It grabs a lot of wrist time. As a matter of fact it's on my wrist at the moment. I find if superior to the newer, larger, shinier model. Nice collection you've got, btw.

I admire the level of consideration you have given to the Speedy and the Sub. I'm far more haphazard in my approach. Good pics, too. An art I have no understanding of whatsoever!
I still like my PO, it's the model with the red 3/6/9 dial. I can't bear to part with it, but I did bin the bracelet. It's on NATO only now. |

Hi,
I hear you. My first serious watch was the 42 PO which I purchased new in 2008. It was my daily beater for years. I loved it, it was a cracking diver. It was hard to sell it but I decided that it was time for Rolex, although, like you, I wasn't keen on Rolex for many years. Now, I am Rolex only guy!

Congratulations on your Submariner purchase, I agree with your positive comments on it, I love mine and will never sell it as it commemorates my retirement.

Welcome Joshua! Wow, your photos are amazing! Thanks for sharing.
I think we have similar tastes. My main 1-2 punch combo for many years has been a Speedy and a Sub. I have the same as you, just a bit older. You obviously put a lot of great thought into your choices. Me, in my younger days, not so much. I was more like "I want a Sub, etc..." LOL. Like you, before my Sub, I also went through an anti-Rolex phase. Now Rolex dominates my collection. Anyway, if I may share, here is my first Rolex: a 14060 Sub bought new in '99 and my '68 pre-moon Speedy cal 321 - bought around '98, shortly after eBay started. Both watches have gone through a lot with me over the years, and I will never let them go. Enjoy your watches, great choices and welcome to the dark side! My One-two Punch Combo |

Welcome to the forum and congratulations! We have a very similar taste in watches. I also own and love the speedy and the sub. I really noticed among us here on the forum, it's rare where someone loves one and not the other. They are both great watches in their own way.

Thoughtful post with great photos! I'm an Omega fan just moving into Rolex territory. I can't imagine parting with my PO though - I may just need a larger watch box.

Nice sub. I doubt you will ever regret selling your PO. Doesn't even get close to the Sub.
