Which is more inappropriate?

LOTS of discussion here about wearing spors-oriented watches with formal wear, or wearing one with a suit at semi-formal events.

But which is more inappropriate: Wearing a sports watch with a tux, or wearing a precious metal single-pusher croc strap high-end haute horlogerie dresser with your normal office attire? Which is the greater faux pas?(And why?)

For me I could care less what anyone thinks and simply wear whatever I want. There are a few here though that get worked up over that thought and my guess is they will see this and share that soon enough.

If you are into rigid rules and live life caring what others think though then listen to them.

I think it would be "B", but I don't care what others think!

I'd say the sports watch with tux is the least best option. Wearing a haute horlogerie with office attire is like wearing a Rolex with shorts and a tee. Sure it looks much more expensive than the rest of the ensemble, but not so much that it looks like a faux pas. But with the tux, apparently it's technically considered rude to wear a watch at all (though I disagree) because looking at it implies that you have somewhere to be when you should be enjoying the formal occasion.

That's kinda what I thought, too. But I wonder: Do we think that solely because we saw James Bond wearing Subs and Seamasters with a tux? I never personally see anyone wearing a sub (or the like) with a tux. But I do see guys wearing a thin 'formal' with a suit in court.

Maybe they're the smart ones -- if you only have one watch, then make it a thin dresser (?).

Usually when I wear a Tux I choose an understated watch. It's in keeping with tradition. Traditions and keeping in the spirit of an event is what makes it special; without it things become meaningless.

There are exceptions: I don't take extra watches on a Cruise so on "formal" nights the Sub or GMT is just fine with a tux; nobody has yet reacted with horror or kicked me out of the concierge lounge.

As to wearing that 50k watch to work, why not !! I don't buy them to sit in a safe only to come out when it will meet a specific occasion.

"Inappropriate" isn't the issue in todays society, it's class or good taste. Either you have it or you don't - which watch is on your wrist won't matter.

If we're really conservative, any watch with a tux is a faux pas. I only have my pocket watch when I wear a tux :)

Amount of damn I give what other people wear though: Zero.

I wear whatever watch I want, when I want. It's my choice and I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks.

to be fair there is an element of caring what others think when deciding how we live our lives, putting aside the fact that it is selfish not to, if we didn't care, half of us would have been arrested by now

We already have so many rules in life that I don't want them invading into my hobby and passion. I just wear what feels right to me at the time.

The sports watch and a tux...if for other reason than I subscribe to the idea that a gentleman doesn't wear a watch with a tux because at a formal event, the time is irrelevant.

I was hoping we were all socially secure enough to eschew the ubiquitous "I don't care what anyone else thinks" remarks. Methinks thou doth protest too much.

Truly, I want to know if any of you think to yourself: "That doesn't look right" when you see a high-end, formal watch worn with standard office attire. I sincerely want your honest opinion. Thanks!

once I get my Gold Oyster perpetual on leather strap, it's going to be my new daily wearer. I can't imagine anyone knowing what it is anyway, most people my age wear bulky gold plated Michael kors watches.

I wear each watch for one week and change so they all get equal air play so yes wear it to casual Friday or going watching sport on a weekend.

Thank you, sir. That's exactly On Point. You wear a Lange Und Zoooon with a Polo shirt and don't feel weird about it! Anyone else with similar sentiments?

Mostly I think "thank god I don't work in a place filled with guys that care about whether my watch and attire compliment each other."

You sir are a Snob and a bore.

I have a habit of wearing a slimmer more understated watch with a tux. I wear a suit every day for work so I wear whatever strikes me when I stand in front of the watch box that morning. Usually it matches my shirt or suit.

Thanks, dex. I own a dozen watches, but I've never owned a true 'formal' watch before. I'm afraid that, after having spent $40 to $60k on a watch, it'll look out of place with a suit & tie.

I've done both. I think A is farther from the watch's intended purpose but I wouldn't call it inappropriate. As for B, I have worn a Calatrava with work clothes and no one has ever commented on it. It's 35mm, about 6mm thick, white gold with black dial. Not easy to notice even for a watch guy.

Plus, I don't think traditional dress watches were designed for black tie events. In this case they'd hardly get worn at all. I think they are meant for suit + tie office attire. A professional setting is exactly what a thin dress watch is meant for, unless "normal office wear" refers to something more casual than wool slacks and a dress shirt.

When I see someone wearing an oversize 'clown' watch with a nice suit I think "That looks crook".
At work, just about anything goes unless there is some sort of established rigid dress code where you work.
For formal, if the watch draws attention to itself it's probably not a great accessory.
(I don't think the 'circles' exist in Australia where someone would think "Damn poor show, what?, wearing a watch with a dinner suit - must be one of those transported chappies.")

Well to counter you with Shakespeare, I cannot be confined within the weak list of a country's fashion. We are the makers of manners. Altho this was said by the great Henry V it still holds true to me and to many others here who have acquired a better conceit of themselves.

I'm not taking sides on this one, but to be fair, if we as a group really don't care what others think then why are these forums littered with so many "this or that" posts?

The OP was asking for opinions- much the same as many on this forum do on a daily basis on a variety of topics. I think his frustration with the non-responses ("I don't care what anyone thinks") is somewhat understandable and truthfully these non responsive statements could be interpreted as somewhat perjorative. Perhaps that's how he took it. I definitely don't see him as either a "snob" or a "bore" (with or without the caps) based on his comments.
