My P serial Submariner which I bought new in 2001 is now running 8 seconds fast per 24 hours, left at night laying flat with dial up. I understand that this position is supposed to make the watch gain a few seconds, but since + 8 seconds is out of the COSC specifications of -4/+6, I thought I would ask you about it.

Is this a problem or should I just forget it? My watch has never been serviced, yet in 14 years I only wore it for a total of maybe 28 weeks (2 weeks a year) and the rest of the time it rested completely stopped inside my safe as I cycled through the rest of my big collection.

What are your thoughts? Thanks

Get it serviced. And wear the damn thing. What's the point of owning it if you never wear it?

If you are only going to wear it for a couple of weeks then why bother worrying about a couple of minutes a day..

It's probably just magnetized, RSC can fix that in minutes.

OH, and wear your watch! What's the point sitting in a safe? Enjoy it!!

If it was magnetized it would be gaining a lot more than eight secs a day. OP, if you only wear it two weeks a year, it's not going to run perfectly. But for a 14 year old watch with no service, eight secs a day is pretty good. Try leaving it on its side, crown up, overnight.

^Didn't know that. Mine was gaining +10 secs/day, and I took it to RSC. They said it was magnetized, and de-magnetized in minutes.

What's the range if it's magnetized then?

If it suddenly starts gaining very quickly then possible magnetized but not a few seconds. If the watch is magnetized the hairspring is effectivley shortened as the coils stick together causing it to gain considerable.

Have to agree Larry and a couple seconds either way out of 86400 in a day is not life threatening or worth worrying about.And if its a consistent 8 seconds fast then its a very very accurate watch as consistency is the biggest factor with any mechanical watch.So all that may be needed is regulation and seeing watch is 14 years old it needs a full service.

The basic service cost on my 2001 P serial 14060M this year (first known service) was around £450 (700$).

It was well worth it in my opinion.

A service is in order and they will regulate it while it is there. Then just enjoy it.

Send the watch to Rikki and let him service it. Cost is about $500 including parts and labor. It will come back like new and spot on accurate.

Just wear it for the 2 weeks...worry about it next year when you wear again

I wound't worry about that unless it was your only watch...b/c 8 sec per day can get annoying every couple weeks when you a few min fast. But if you only wear it here and there....just let it go for a few more years at the rate you wear it

Actually it's very consistent and runs exactly 8 seconds fast every day so I have to admire it despite the couple of seconds over the COSC limits. Don't want anyone inside it, so I'll just leave it for 14 more years
