Turned off by Bond-related marketing
Am I the only one? Companies have to advertise, but the blunt product placement in the movie and association of a product with a fictitious character make me cringe. Sorry, Omega, I won't be buying your "Bond's choice" any time soon.
By the way, I am not an Omega basher by any means. Love my Speedy. |

Omega tend to beat the death out of one great design (the many sides of the moon) or one great theme (Bond).. law of diminishing returns kick in after certain cut off point.

Turned off by Bond-related marketing
Movies exist, largely, to make money. I'd say the same can be said about Omega. Blatant and unashamed product placement works on the masses, so why not milk it for all it's worth?

Yes, I completely agree. Not only do I think some the promos are overdone, but I'm not a fan of the Bond branded watch, with the logos and such.

I don't really mind it. It is a bit in your face, but that's the purpose of marketing.
I've gone back and forth on how I feel about the whole idea of product placement on a fictional character. At this point, I don't think it's any better or worse than other celebrity endorsements. Bond is a cultural icon. Not sure why a professional athlete or other celebrity being a brand ambassador is any better. At the end of the day, money is being paid for both fictional and real people to use a particular brand. Any big budget movie these days has product placement. Let's also not forget that Rolex spends more on marketing than any other watch company in the world. Quote:
It's all about money. This is one of those threads and issues where people seem to target Omega and completely ignore that other brands including Rolex do the exact same thing. |

Yeah Syed,
The Tudor/Rolex Tiger Woods endorsement deal is pretty bad too. At least bond is cool

The whole Omega/Bond thing is a joke, everyone knows Bond always wore Rolex and Omega are now just the highest bidder.

I am not a fan of the Bond connection either...Had a look at the Omega Seamaster 300 "Spectre" Limited Edition this weekend. It has a few vital improvements over the original, including:
> A really great brushed bracelet. Problem is that the clasp has a 007 engraved into it. Not a deal breaker but would have been better without it. > A non dive bi-directional bezel? Not sure what that is all about. > Why is the lollipop right on the end of the second hand? > The nato strap is really cool but for me it added height to a watch that is already too thick for its diameter. Some may like it but it looks awkward on me. > The accessories are great, loupe, spare spring bars and a spring bar tool. The killer is the price though, and then add the lack of the normal discount because its a Bond "limited edition" and its around $2,100 more than the standard model. If I could have the non Spectre watch with the Spectre brushed bracelet without the 007, and at the non Spectre price, i would get it.

I have to admit I rolled my eyes at the "15,007 gauss" dial. Otherwise a great-looking watch.

this sort of mass-advertising and movie tie-in seems better suited for a $100 watch, not one that costs several thousand.

I agree. I've read threads here were people think Rolex Ambassadors are doing it for free because Rolex really rocks. Not to mention how butt hurt Rolex fanboys are that Bond is wearing an Omega. 25% of the TRF threads is about Bond's Rolex connection.

Well I bought the Spectre SM300 for the reasons Michael N Q8 has already mentioned, all brushed bracelet, extra NATO strap and accessories and I actually prefer the omission of the number 12 on the dial and the larger Omega.
However, I did manage to get a discount. Would I have still bought it at full price, probably not !!! |

I'm not a fan of the extensive Bond marketing either. I can't quite see the appeal of a fictional character and the amount of threads posted on TRF about this. After all, we don't have many "what watch does Harry Potter wear" topics.

Bond is a character, not a real person. The Bond character has also worn watches other than Rolex and Omega. I don't understand why some seem to be upset about Bond wearing an Omega. It's stupid.

It bothers way too many people. Not sure how anyone can live with that much insecurity. It's crazy that something as simple as a marketing deal can bother people so much. Inconsistency is also another problem. Rolex fans want to go on and on about how Bond wore a Rolex in the books. Yes, Rolex was mentioned by name in only two of the bond books. Then they go crazy about Sean Connery wearing a Sub on that strap. That's not what he wore in the books. So what now? A tiny percentage of people who know the name Bond, know of it from the books. Everyone else knows about bond from the movies. He's worn Seikos in the movies as well. I wonder if the Rolex fanbase would be as upset if Seiko had paid for Bond to wear a Seiko. They probably would be. |

Any watch company would have jumped at the chance for the Bond association. I don't think less of Omega for it. Rolex would have done it in a heart beat.

does everyone know that? im willing to bet 99.9% of the moviegoers seeing the movie this weekend DO NOT know that. now, in regards to the Spectre SM300Mc, I love the look of it with the exception of the huge OMEGA and logo on the dial and 007 on the clasp. but the bezel is really neat and the lollipop is a nice touch. |

I don't really mind it. I have a steel planet ocean with the ceramic bezel in 42mm which I believe is the same one he wore for part of skyfall. It gets the name out there and I think people generally associate bond with high end stuff: Aston Martin, nice (Tom Ford) suits, big money jackpots.... I think the watches with the 007 on it maybe a little too much, but the advertising campaign in the movie is fine as long as they keep the wrist shots down to 1 or 2 the entire movie so it isn't too obvious.

I enjoy the James Bond movies, and the books even more...but Omega's affiliation with the franchise is off putting for me. I'd never want a watch with "Bond" elements on it. Never. I do think it cheapens the brand like another posted above mentioned.
However to me that's different than a regular watch worn in the movies for example the 42mm PO 2500 in Casino Royale and Quantum, which I proudly own, but not for any reasons to do with Bond. |

Me too, and also some of the Snoopy stuff, but to each his own. If sales tank, they'll stop. The free market speaks.

It's a little gimmicky
I enjoy how a watch makes someone feel like Bond minus the looks, iq, agility, bankroll, and of course the Aston Martin But I guess you've got to start somewhere |
