What age should a watch have before it is vintage?

Discuss.

What age... is a watch considered vintage? 30? 40?

Any classification would be arbitrary.

With other collectibles there seems to be a classification by age, like 20+ would be a Classic, and 30+ would be vintage, or something like that.

Around here the criteria seems to be feature-related: plexi crystals and painted (non-WG surrounds) marker dials are considered the limits of vintage-dom. Everything after that is considered modern.

Personally I think that non-SEL bracelets and tritium dials should be considered vintage already, or at least Classic.

Plexi crystals and matte dials w/o the WG surrounds are what most consider vintage. There are definitely some modern pieces that are deemed more collectible than others...the cream dialed Exp II 16550 and Patrizzi dialed 16520 quickly come to mind. Will there be a shift as to what is considered vintage as the price of current vintage models continues to rise? Who knows, we can only speculate.

I know this us kind of a moving target as things age but I generally use the plexi crystal for my line of separation (with a few exceptions possible).

It's generally attributed to period and the style in which the watches were made, such as models with plexiglass and lug holes for example.

There was a detailed discussion here: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=380134

Oyster 6424 didn't have lug holes. There's probably a few others.
