Design or Coincidence?

Probably already covered, but interestingly enough,

if your GMT hand is synced with your home time, and you align the HOUR hand to the direction of where the sun is, the GMT hand will always indicate a north heading. I mention this because the lady and I were hiking last weekend and we found ourselves a bit lost. This "compass" function actually got us back to the car.

With the 24 hour bezel, I wonder if this is coincidence or part of the design?

It's a little known secret of the GMT, and Explorer II, but I've never heard of Rolex marketing it as an actual feature.

Probably coincidence.
You can use a regular 2-hand watch as a compass as well.

Perhaps more convenient with a 24-hour hand. But what if the 24-hour hand is synced to UTC, as many people do, like me?

I just gave that a shot and ended up walking 200km in the opposite direction.

Not happy about this.

You just needed to add a little extra information.

I was informed of this at an AD and it's worked every time I've tested it. Design or coincidence once you know the tool is there it can be useful.

I don't know if it's design or coincidence...but it just confirms that the GMT is one of the most useful watches on the planet.

You had better bring a smart phone with its compass app and double check it. You may bet your life on the GMT hand, if you forget you are traveling in the mountain of southern hemisphere where the GMT compass function doesn't apply appropriately.

Coincidence. But as Larry says, Rolex hasn't exactly kept it a secret.

In all the reading I did prior to purchasing my 16570, this was never mentioned. Pretty cool.
