Ladies Unicorn Rolex with mans name on the face

Ok this has me stumped and I am usually good at tracking things down , I found a lovely 9ct Ladies Unicorn watch , it has on the face Unicorn and at the bottom on the face it has the words Joe Reid . This name is where you would normally find the amount of jewels and its the same writing as the word Unicorn . I cant for the life of me figure out why it would be like this , I will post a pic later when the cameras charged up .

Kia Ora Bro ....

Hi Steve,

Paul from sunny Wellington here - how's it going.

There was an era when jewellers would add their own details to a watch dial before sale. I'm talking about way back when - 1920s / 30s perhaps ?.
Sometimes the jeweller details accompanied the usual manufacturers logo .... sometimes it was simply the jewellers info.
A VRF member has a splendid very early Rolex oyster watch with text on the dial relating to a jeweller from Taihape NZ - go figure.

Seems your watch may have been originally sold by this fella down in Oamaru . Excerpt is from the Oamaru Mail circa 1914 ....

Extra info ....

A bit more scouting around and I see that Joe Reid Jewellers in Oamaru did personalise dials on watches they sold.

A 'Joe Reid Oamaru' watch was up for sale on a Spanish-language web-site a few months back. Pic has been deleted but I guess that adds some weight to the theory as to where your watch originated

Icon14 And Kia Ora From Sunny Nelson

well maybe not so sunny today ............

Now that was amazing how fast someone tracked that down , I will ask the previous owner if her mother lived in Oamaru . But She must have or visited there and bought the watch . I was chatting with a few of the shop dealers here today about the watch and all are intrigued , as they could not understand why it would have be on there , none had seen anything like it before , well the watch is standard issue but with the name Joe Reid name .......... I'll post a pic with the next message . .......... Thanks Again Paul ........
