Bother, Annoy, Amuse?
What is your reaction, if any, to seeing someone wearing a Rolex that they have obviously not taken anything resembling care of?
Examples being: - Remarkable bracelet stretch - Excessive scratches on bracelet, bezel, crystal, etc... - Comments from them about how it has "always" kept bad time - i.e. not been serviced/calibrated... Their watch, their experience, I understand but some of the condition I've seen real beauties in makes me cringe... |

Sorry but I can't really help you here. Nothing drives me crazier than reading about a dive watch that someone doesn't want to get wet, or wear out in the rain. I'm pleased to see these well worn Rolexes. Shows the owner knows the watches can take it. Last fall I was dry walling our dining room and hallway wearing my Pepsi GMT. Never gave it a second thought. And I have never encountered a Rolex owner in the wild who ever said to me their Rolex kept bad time. Cheers.

I'll rather have a banged-up used looking Rolex, than the soft mushy things called an "over polished oyster case".

The only time I had an experience with this is with an acquaintance of some years back who had his fathers bubbleback from the 50's. It had great sentimental value to him but the tube or crown was stripped and couldn't be screwed down and he refused to get it repaired.
He wore it every day on an old twist-o-flex. He even complained that it would fog up on rainy days. I'm sure that by now it is shut down permanently. Now that I think of it he was a jack ars. |

I've never seen either in the wild. My President and Jubilees have some stretch but not to the point of needing repair.

I have heard the "keep bad time" thing a few times from different people.
Either way, I probably wouldn't judge... their watch... |

Who cares?
None of my business what they do with their watches - it's their money after all. Focus on what's important for you, not something you have no control over.

I actively look for pieces that are not cared for by unknowing owners.
I approach them with intention to buy, and leave them my number.

Unless it broken, I'm actually excited to see someone use their watch for what it really is.... A watch!

Awesome is the word I would choose!
They own the watch not the watch owning them.

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If I had a choice, I'd prefer that to the people that shelter theirs from everything.

How many of these interactions have you had? As someone else mentioned the only thing that makes me cringe is when a bushed sports watch has been polished to hell on every surface!
Also not crazy about ridiculous mods. Otherwise, -bracelet stretch happens over time on older models, nothing but respect there. -My dad's 1655 Mark I has received regular service and runs perfectly, but he refuses to have it polished/refinished so it looks like it's been through hell, and it has. Also nothing but respect there too! ![]() |

I care about almost nothing.
My wife, my friends, my business. That's about it. What anyone else wants to do, not worth my time. I used to care about everything and realized it's only effecting me. People will do their own thing no matter how I feel. It was a hard lesson, and I have to relearn it from time to time, but my life is so far better now.

Not bothered about others but most of the ladies in my family do not look after their watches at all. I couldn't even turn the bezel on one watch so gunked together was it.

I buy some "projects" and will wear them to find out just how much reconstruction I plan to do: is the timekeeping off enough to be noticeable, does the roughness of the case annoy me, is the dial too far gone to be enjoyable, etc. I guess anyone who saw me wearing one of the recent purchases would probably think I had been wearing it for years while feeding dead hookers into the wood-chipper. Once I've restored what I feel absolutely needs it, I tend to keep them pristine until they sell, which means, I don't wear them very much. I wonder what an enthusiast would say if they saw me wearing a "before" project, since few ever see me wearing an "after".

Their watch their choice. Some like new watches, some like well worn so each to their own.
