Classic chronos... which would you choose?

I want to get a traditional looking chrono, bi-compax, but with more modern dimensions. At this point, I am between the Girard Perregaux 1966 Chrono, or the AP Jules Audemars Gstaad Classic. The GP is 42mm and the AP 41mm, so not much difference there. Both have in-house movements, with an add-on chrono module, so again, both are similar there.

Besides the looks of the watch, it comes down to what you get for your money.
For about the same price, I can get the Girard Perregaux in 18K gold, but besides the brand not being up there with AP, the movement is not as nicely finished as the AP. The AP on the other hand is Titanium (vs 18K), but has a nicer (better?) movement ticking inside.

This particular GP has been discontinued, just like the AP, and both can be had at a very good discount BNIB. Which would you choose?

neither makes the cut for me, buy what you like not what you can get the best discount on or ultimately you may pay twice?

i like the look of the GP better but not a fan of a date on a chrono especially one that seems poorly located on the dial.

also the large numeral 12 is inexplicable.

Why are the 5 and 4 reversed on the GP?

Haha, good catch! Apparently this was a pre-production image and someone at GP got an earful for that! ;)

Besides that , aesthetically, I like the GP over the AP. I don't know much about GP as a brand, though.

Regarding GP not being up there with AP – completely disagree.
The movements are nice enough but not exactly fascinating, with the AP having the more interesting rotor, and the GP slightly better decorated.
Then again, unless you plan to wear it back to front, the novelty of the movement’s look will wane in a very short timeframe.

I’m not fussed on the AP’s crown being so low in the case profile, whereas the GP’s is inline with the pushers and more central.
Overall, with a date too, the GP makes a stronger case for itself, so long as you’re willing to be brand agnostic.

Neither…the one RG pusher on the AP looks completely out of place.

Out of the 2 I would choose the AP, but personally I would go for a Classic IWC Portuguese 7 Days, 42mm....

My fav is the White dialed with blue numerals and strap

With more money to spend...

Since we brought IWC into the mix- No it's not an AP... But it's beautifully designed, the finish on the movement is outstanding and the proportions are just right.

The IWCs are of course beautiful, but the OP wants a Bicompax chronograph. For me it would come down to the GP because I don't have a PM piece yet and I prefer a date function. The GP seems to be very heavily discounted on the gray market right now so that would probably seal it for me.

Agree with this completely. As much as I liked the IWC, it is not a chrono, although it looks similar to one with the two sub-dials. I am thinking along the same lines regarding a PM piece... and the date... and the HEAVY discounts.
