Honesty is the best policy. One once returned a wallet I found in Las Vegas with about $1200 in it. The owner was very grateful and incredulous. We wanted to give me a reward, I declined, but we agreed on a buffet dinner. Nice older couple. Maybe it was their lucky day?

Why would you put $32,000 in a safe deposit box?

My bank doesn't allow money in the safe deposit boxes, but I'm not sure how they would know.

It would seem to me that opening an account would be the better option.

Guess it depends how you earned it, if it can be deposited.

"A Family leaves behind 32k"... What kind of family is this... Sopranos? Carleones?

Without the proper paperwork, it's illegal to carry more than $10k cash on you. It's one of those odd laws in the books. Don Johnson was detained several years ago for this. Fortunately he had the proper documents. He was going to meet someone about producing an independent movie. It doesn't really make sense to me since I walk around with a $25k watch on my wrist. I'm guessing it was put in place so drug dealers/criminals would have additional charges against them.

Is that local or federal? I went to buy some cattle with $40k once, and the sale didn't work out, so the cash sat in my safe until I made it back into town. Would have been pretty frustrating to be arrested for not buying cows.

Federal. I believe it all stems from the Patriot Act. I'm sure there are simple forms that you could carry.

May I add that you, sir, have massive kahunas for carrying that much cash!!!

Not illegal. Might not be the best idea though. Civil forfeiture would be the bigger concern.

Ok, it falls under broader civil forfeiture laws. Point is, the police can legally take your cash if it's over 10k unless you can prove it isn't from illegal activities. It takes a lawyer skilled in this area to get your money back, minus fees. I was wrong in that there is no specific law regarding this except for financial institutions where IRS form 8300 is needed. However, why would anyone take the risk knowing cops can very easily take it???? Now we know so ignorance is no excuse.

I always have at least $25k in my bank safety deposit box and I've gone to buy cars and motorcycles with upwards of $30k on me.

Heck in Vegas more than a few people are walking around with more than $10k, stupid law, if you ask me...

The feds and local departments can and will seize cash over 10k whether it be civil or criminal. It's darn near impossible to get back after its in their hands. Went through this before.
